My hard drive crashed and refused to boot, so I got a new hard drive and put a fresh copy of Windows XP on it. Now, I can access the old hard drive fine through My Computer, but when I try and go into my Documents and Settings folder to get my files, it says Access Denied. I assume this is because I had a password lock on my account, but is there any way to get around this?

i'm assuming you have a system disk for xp. in your bios settings, make sure your boot order is set so that your cd-rom boots before your hard drive. put the disk in your drive, reboot you pc. the screen will say "press any key to boot from cd...." do so. let it do it's thing. then select r for repair. it'll ask you which copy of xp you want to log into. choose your old one, probably number 2 on the list. it'll log into your old xp. type help for a list of commands you can use in recovery console. if nothing else, you should be able to locate the files you want and move them, or copy them to your new hard drive. you might even be able to fix your old hard drive using commands like chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr. try using attrib on the files to change their attributes. good luck

Find someone with norton ghost recovery disk & then boot to that disk - if it can see the disk it'll allow you to copy files from it (other than that it's a permission issue which would require you to find a way to log into the old drive as an adminsitrator or the particular user for which you are trying to recover files from - if stand alone machine (i.e. not part of a domain) try researching a way to crack adminsitrator access...good luck

You can use a "linux boot disc" to boot an OS where you can access all the files on the hard drive, bypassing the permissions.
