Each time I attempt to install a program onto my system, the windows install wizard begins to open, then simply closes; there is no error message or anything like that, rather, it just starts & then just stops. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem (other than just giving up and buying another computer, which I'm about to do)? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated; plus, if a suggestion helps me fix the problem, I'll select it as best answer.

Thanx! : )

If you XP is not having Service pack 2 please install it and update the patches. Install the windows installer 3.1 also. This could solve ur problem.

To me the problem sounds like a hardware issue. If you're running 256 megs of RAM on Windows XP, you need to double that. Plus, your computer might need a restore. There is another alternative. Click Start, Run, then browse and look for the drive and disk you just put in and then open it. There should be a file called INSTALL or SETUP. Choose one of those then click Ok. See if that helps. The RAM thing might be the problem. Windows XP requires 256MB of RAM just to run, nevermind other applications. You could be eating up your memory and there's no room to run applications. Also, remember to read the side of the packaging for programs you want to load. Sometimes that makes a difference. Good luck!

in case you have a scourge test on your laptop then it is possibly what's making it sluggish. maximum virus scans start to run a scourge test as quickly as a working laptop or laptop started up. IF this isn't any longer that, then perhaps you may desire to uninstall some stuff on your laptop. then you definately possibly does not have sufficient loose complicated stress area. IF this isn't any longer that the two, then perhaps this is which you have no longer have been given sufficient memory. it continually could be new hardware you have put in or perhaps even the proccesser is basically too previous or no longer functioning precise.

How much memory do you have on the system and what operation system are you running?

You can re-install Windows but I doubt that will remove that problem.
