Desktops - October 2006

my computer is making strange noises...it used to be more of grinding sound, now it sounds like more whirring with a small amount of grinding. What's going on? Will it explode??

I just bought a new motherboard and and Intel Pentium 4 Processor. (They are both compatible) The processor is 1.6 GHz. I installed them into the case of a pretty old computer, and used that old computer's power supply and fan. I plugged all of the needed cables into the right sockets on the motherboard. (The old fan's cord couldn't reach the System Fan connector, so I plugged it into the Power Fan connector. Is that a big deal?) When I pressed the button on the front of the computer, nothing. I unplugged the powercord from the back, and I heard this high-pitched squealing that took about 20-30 seconds to completely stop. Would the old power supply be the reason for this? Thanks.

Presently i am using p3 with 700Mhz with only 192mb of Ram is it better to increase my ram till then ,does it make any difference in the performance of my Pc ?if so how much is needed i.e ram

i just put in a new motherboard and processer and when i turn the computer on it wont detect my CD Rom drives. i tried switching the cabels and when i do that it wont detect the hard drive....any ideas?

before it goes to windows xp this black screen pops up that says 'American Megatrends' and at the bottom you have to hit F2 to continue before it will restart.
how can i get rid of that so it just restarts on its own with out that screen poppingup?

I am looking for the best performer but im not sure which might work better. I will be using computer for gaming, working for univeristy things (coursework) and internet and other things. They both are the same price but dont know which is best.

I have an older Compaq Presario destop tower. It has 4 USB ports...2 in the back & 2 in the front. I was trying to uninstall a printer and I clicked on the wrong thing in my Device Manager. Anybody have an ideas as to how I can get them back. None of my UBS devices work now...not even my mouse! HELP!

I have been comparing manufacturers to find the best deal for my money but not really sure what the best deal is. Idealy want 19" widscreenTFT approx 512mb graphics card and either intel pentium D or amd athlon64x2 processor& a hard drive not more than 250gb.

the menu button on my monitor seems to have a problem so that it continually activates itself giving me the option of changing color and contrast on my screen. I would really like this to stop because it is disruptive and annoying does anyone know how I can fix this?

Okay, yesterday, all of a sudden, my computer had a hard time accessing some of the programs and files i had recently saved a couple hours earlier. I would click on teh programs to open and the system would freeze. The only hting i could do to undo the freeze was restart the computer. I checkd the event viewer and error code 7 with a "bad block" message was shown. I'm thinking it is the early to middle onset of disk failure. Any ideas? Also, if it is disk failure, I have a couple things on there that i want to keep. They are quite important to me... not anyone else but to me. Is there anyway I can keep these files? Is there anyway i can save them to a disc or floppy and move them oer to another drive later on???

I am having some trouble with my pc and I want to restore it back to the factory settings.

When I reboot my pc what buttons do I have to press to get the options up to do that?

My pc is a Medion if that helps at all?
