Well I am gonna assume you want an AMD since you only listed AMD sockets, in which case you would want AM2 it is the newest. Just so you know the Intel Core 2 Duo is the best processor for gaming right now, which uses 775, but if you want AMD go with the AM2.

I believe you mean socket 939 instead of 929. I would go with either 939 or AM2. AM2 is the newest socket type for AMD and 939 was the one right before AM2.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Dual Core Processor Memory is the best I would say but also the AMD Athlon 3200+ Dual Core Processor with 1024Mb of ram (1Gb) is fine to use, I have one myself but have also a lot of add-ons when it comes down to graphic cards sound cards and all the other gadgets you can buy.
No matter what I ask this machine to do it never has a problem, the graphics are smooth sound is great and best of all it NEVER crashes on me.

the best i recommend is 939 socket type. which supports AMD Athlon 64-bit series.
Use a motherboard Gigabyte: model k8n Pro-SLI
with a chipset of NVIDIA nForce4 SLI, your board can support up to 4GB (what a power!)
use a VGA Card Geforce 7800 GTX @ 256mb
