I have a lot of videocassettes that i want to convert to dvd to preserve them, some are from when we were kids; also i have a lot of cassette tapes and i wonder if they too can be converted to a dvd or cd format. my late father and grandmother are featured in these tapes and they contain a lot of family history. I heard that getting an s-video cable might do this, but perhaps if someone knew of a website that could show me step by step how to connect up and use the set-up would be great. I am by no means a computer technician but with simple terminology and instructions I might be able to make this work.

I get conflicting opinions on whether you should turn off your computer every day, especially if you are gone for awhile. Some say just leave it on all the time.

I'm not concerned about the electricity use. So is it better to turn it off or just leave it running?

Does it matter if it's desk top or a lap top? I imagine it's not good to keep lap top on all the time on a power adapter

Seems like I have searched every forum on the net for the answer to this one and DELL tech service has not helped either.

Pc was running XP PRO. I plugged in an external USB Hard Drive and it hung up the screen. I did a reboot and now all I get is:

A Disk read error occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

The external USB drive is disconnected. There is nothing in any of the CD/DVD/Disk drives. I have tried changing the BIOS to boot from CD with Windows disk in it (so I can do repair) it does not get that far.

I have tried reseting to the BIOS defaults. No difference.
I have tried running DELL's recommend BIOS HD tests - don't work
I have tried reseting the config. No difference.
I have checked the cables to the HD drive. Nothing obvious.

So my questions are:

1. Anything else I try with the BIOS/software?
2. Is this the HD or the motherboard. Which do I replace? I know the obvious thing to do is take the HD and put it in another PC. But I do not have another PC.

I really need to know if I can use this type of RAM in my computer, My computer was purchased in 2001 and came with 64RAM PC-100 DIMM 100MHZ. I also believe it takes Non-ECC RAM. I want to upgrade to maybe 512. I need to know if I can use PC-133 RAM? And if so, does the MHZ number has to be 100 or will it be something else? I find a lot more PC-133 RAM than I can find PC-100. I just wanna know before I buy something that I cannot use. Should I stick with exactly what came in my computer or is this PC-133 compatible? Please help, I'm a computer dummy. If this helps, I think I have AMD Duron and running Windows ME. Please don't laugh, I know I need a new computer.

I currently own a 2000 Compaq Presario 5000 series
1.2GHz Celeron Precessor
128MB SyncDRAM Total System Memory
20GB UltraDMA Hard Drive

I've added a video graphics card and more memory. My Compaq has been great and barely ever gave me trouble but has recently acted up and I am in need for a new PC. Im looking into more Compaqs and Gateway also.

I've asked this before, but forgot to add details, so I'm doing it again...
Here are some more details:
It's a Dell Dimension 8300, 2.66 gig pentium 4 processor, 1 gig ram. I have no idea what mother board I have, nor do I know exactly how to check. I DO have both regular pci slots and agp slot, but I'm not sure what kind of agp slot it is.
(I'm told that there are 2 - 4x & 8x.)
Right now, I have a BFG GeForce 5500fx card with 256megs of ram.

I am looking for a new motherboard and graphics card for my desktop. Right now my computer is running really slow when I play a game and it is really making mad and I want to start playing World of Warcraft but it will run too slow. What should I get to run the game to it full capacity? Do you have any ideas? Give me sites or names of different brands.
