Dual Channel Kits are gimmicks. Basically they are saying they are the two identical RAM sticks. They just package it as dual channel RAM kit.

Identical (or same size/speed) RAM sticks is fine. Those dual channel RAM kit pretty much just two RAM sticks of the same size and same speed.

As has already been pronounced, twin-channel has two times the files throughput of unmarried channel. and when you consider that your chipset helps twin-channel, and P4's were already starved for memory throughput (Intel got here up with twin-channel RAM highly to alleviate the files starvation that P4's experienced at the same time as operating unmarried channel), you ought to get rid of that 256MB stick. an better 256MB will no longer make any large difference, besides, in spite of Vista. If it were a 1GB stick, it would help.

Read this article from Wikipedia. It appears to me you have to have a motherboard that supports dual channel architecture.
