I guess you can get by without it, but I would certainly recommend you take the fan off and add some grease, it will certainly improve your cooling performance.

This "grease" as you call it, is the only way that the heatsink makes contact with the cpu. There can be as much as a 30*C drop in temperature, using the same cpu and the same heatsink and fan, WITH thermal paste, compared to without it.

I HAVE AN OLD 486 CPU THAT IS USED BY THE KIDS. THIS UNIT STAYS ON 24/7. I HAVE NEVER HAD THE COOLING FAN GREASED AND IT WORKS JUST FINE. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR ABOUT 10+ YEARS NOW.

No, you are OK, but you can take it back out and grease it so the fan won't overheat or burn up your cpu.

If there was already some on there you might be alright. Go into the bios and check the temp. If it is ok, you are probably fine. If not, just clean it and apply the paste and clamp it back on, its not really that big a hassle, is it?
