Preferably, I'd like to get pointed to a survey which represents how many people leave their computers running constantly. A bonus would be to know how many of those machines are connected to the Internet via a high speed connection.

My computers proceesor is running near 100% all the time. I am fairly confident I have eliminated most if not all spyware. I have minimized my startup programs and my memory usage seems normal during operation. The computer is lagging but I have scoured the files (even hidden ones) and I can't find anything that seems out of the ordinary. One thing I notice to is that my processor fan is going nuts and is very loud m,os of the time, is this a related problem to the processor? I'm just about to back-up and wipe the drive. Does anyone have any easier suggestions? Am I missing something?

2 of my computers have been shutting down in the mist of working on them- no warning- just a complete black screen. After going through the start-up process the main computer would black-out and reboot and the other computer would reboot and stay up for a hour or so. I took the main computer to a repair shop and replaced the hard drive and memory. At the computer shop for 1 week, the computer did not shut down-AT ALL. After returning the main computer home during the starting up process the computer continued to shut down. I ever took the main computer room to room in my apartment and it continued to do that same thing. I brought a new computer and the new computer also continued to shut down as well. I took the computers to a friend's home and both of the computers booted up with no problems. I live in an apartment for 9 years and has never had a problem with electrical power. The TV’s, stereos and clock are not affected, how is this possible?

I am looking for computers both real world, and online, as well as the worth of my own computer. I'm thinking breaking it down to parts, and adding it up. New a little higher than new parts, used a little less.

I wish there was like and appraise-Bay (play on eBay) where people could say what they'd pay, and then average it out or something.

Somehow when he tried to hook it back it, the computer overheated or something as some of the wires inside melted, they are ones that plug into the back of the hard drive I think, now we can not get the computer to work without overheating, is there anyone on here who knows much about computers and maybe can tell me what happened and if there is a way to fix it. It worked great other than being slow before this now it won't do anything.

I have a motherboard with 24 pines of power cord but my power supply has only 20. In despite of that i made the connection (4 pines not connected) and it worked. I wonder if this may be the cause of these failures on booting the system some times. Also one time a blue screen appeared saying something with my hardware or software could be wrong.

PROBLEM:
I may have partially friend a secondary IDE channel interface on a x86 machine, possibly by static or plugging/unplugging the ribbon cable while the motherboard was partly powered.

SYMPTOMS:
At boot, the BIOS (Phoenix, circa 2002) can't recognize anything on that channel, but sees "something" and tries for about 90 second per device - three minutes if two drives are attached.
After boot, I can open/close the tray, and dmesg reports the drive ID, but it remains inaccessible.

GOAL
I would like to see if it's really hardware-gone or if there's some strange firmware setting somewhere that can be fixed. I'd prefer to save this IDE channel to any alternative I can think of, such as putting CD and HD on primary, or getting a PCI IDE/PATA interface card.

Ive just bought a second hard-drive from my machine.

I currently have a 160 gig installed as a master and Ive just added my new 160 gig as a salve.

Ive booted up the machine and in the setup, ive set it up so both IDE devices are on AUTO.

I then restarted my machine, went into my computer, and only my master drive shows up????

have I done something wrong?

I have an Emachines T2482 2400+ AthlonXP with 1gig ram 300w psu(brand new) (i'd tell you more, but their support site is down ATM.
I don't play games but I want the best card for working with Photoshop CS2. I had a FX5200 128mb if I remember right, and it just died from a frozen fan(HEAT! caps burst). I am now using (hides head) onboard for the moment, and it takes years just to open an image in photoshop. The old card wasn't real bad for image editing, but better is better, and if I have to get a new card, might as well bump it up a bit if it will show an improvement.
I was looking at these cards from tigerdirect as I was already going to order a $10 agp card from them for my sisters machine, she only surfs the web, and I'm not positive that a new video card is all she needs so I don't want to spend too much money there.

OK here are the cards:
DiabloTek Radeon 9600XT 256mb AGP

I used to have one Task bar on my desk top after I messed it up I found 2 Desk top task bars. What I did was on the left side of the task bar next to start button there were two vertical doted lines when I moved the muse the pointer changed to 2 sided arrow and I moved that double haded arrow towards left or right as far as I could and this happened. I can see that there are two task bars one on the top of the other (one behind the other) how can I get back to my old or orginal or default task bar?

I bought a replacement power supply off of ebay. The power supply was not the exact same one as the original but the seller swears up and down that it's compatible. I installed the new power supply and here's what happens ...

As soon as the computer is plugged in the lights on the front of the machine turn on and the internal fan starts running. However, the on/off switch has no effect on anything. The front light stays on and the internal fan just keep running - but the computer cannot be powered down or booted up.
