I am getting a new computer, and it has two sticks of 512. IT also has 4 RAM slots though, and so I was wondering if I could put the stick of 1 gig I already have in it with the other 512s. Would I get 2 gigs of memory? Would my computer simply fail to recognize some of the memory? Would my computer crash? Any insight would prove helpful.

It's a very old computer. Also there are so many pop up false error messages. When I type the letters don't appear for several seconds afterward. I told my boss but he doesn't care, (very low budget). We don't have an IT department to help or do any maintenance. Is there a way to crash it myself? I tried doing all the disk cleanup and other advice for speeding it up that I read on Yahoo answers but it didn't help.

I am considered VERY computer literate, but now I need help! I had a Hewlett Packard Pavillion with Windows ME 2000 operating system, but the power source went out, leaving me stranded--without a backup of my 30GB harddrive with irreplaceable info. My uncle took the hard drive and put it in a new tower, but that tower is ancient with less than 300mHz--SLOW!!! This way, I was able to keep the OS and info on my internal harddrive. Is there any way to do this again, but with a new tower (motherboard, etc) that has more speed (1Ghz or higher) and more RAM (256 or higher)? If so, how do I do it myself? I catch on quickly!!!

What do I have to buy to make it run fast enough to run bigger games. It works fine but I want to install games with better graphics and they always run too slow. Also how much would the hardware cost and how do I install it?

Hi there everyone!
I've noticed that lately, while I am listening to my mp3 files (no matter what player), while my computer accesses the Hard Drive, there's this noise, quite noticeable. Also, I've noticed a lag on my PC's response to many commands.
I'm worried, because I don't know where this problem arises. Might as well be anywhere, but I suspect the HD unit which is more or less a recent model -say I bought it bout 1 year ago-, the sound card (less probable) or even my microprocessor. Processor: AMD athlon 1.39 GHz 5 years old.
Does someone have an explanation to this?
Thanks for your replies!

I own a 2002 Compaq Presario (not sure what model, my dad bought it for me at a Mega-one-stop shopping center for $200, so it's a bit crap. Only reason it lasted this long was I had the Geek Squad trip it out six months after my dad gave it to me) that currently has a AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor in it (I'm not sure about the motherboard). A few years ago I updated the video card to a Raedon 9800 and added more RAM to it. Recently the computer has been crashing, freezing and stalling like an S.O.B. and a friend of mind suggested upgrading the motherboard/processor. I will more than likely have to update the power supply and cooling system as well, but what are some good motherboard/processor drives out there, average prices and quality. Thanks in advance.

This is for the last person who posted on this question before.Um before you start judging,i recieved the cpu in the "dusty" condition it was in.And reseating things DOES work if something came loose. And im sorry but my cpu does not have a "memory card problem" because it does not have one.And if it did i assure you that would have nothing to do with the problem at hand, lol.FYI,i went to bios manufacturer website and it told me about every beep except 3 BEEPS in a row.Thats why i asked the queston,DUH...Why dont yo find something better to do then bash people because of the way they communicate.

I've looked at many motherboards, in my own computer and on websites, and I have never seen one with more than 4 slots for RAM. Why is this?

I have a dell Dimension 510E, with P4 duel core cpu, its pretty powerful. However, I only have DDR2 512mb ram. I would like to upgrade it to 1gb. I looked up DDR2 RAM. I noticed that there were more than just one type. there are PC3200 and PC4500 and something else.
What are the differences?
which one should I get?

Hey. I guess I am an intermediate level user. I have taken apart, added and upgraded components of my comp. Found out the hard way that dell likes it proprietary, after I bought a good power supply (added good vid card...wanted adequate juice)

Anyways. I have gotten two bs's with mem failure. a - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA , and
a DRIVER_TRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL ...memory dumps, then manually powered off.
I have run as much as I could of memtest86, about 3 hours, no errors, 3 passes. 8k,512k,1500mb ram. I am not sure which tests to select or how long to run.
Heat concerns....I have an internal fan for the video card, and the exhaust hood over the heat sink, meaning it has a small negative pressure. Did a complete cleanout inside a few hours ago, and saw that 4 caps along the heatsink, hood side, were bulging upwards slightly and had small amounts..a little drop size, of clay colored substance. dang. They could be my prob?

I will be removing the hard drive from my dell dimension 8400 desktop, but i am unsure of where the hard drive is specifically, in the tower. (CNET has pictures of interior, but not lines showing me what is what part). i also need to know which wires i need to remove. will someone kindly supply me with a link that shows me arrow lines to how i can take this drive out, without damaging it or its components? any tips on tools needed also appreciated. do you think this hard drive can be co-mounted inside of my dell xps 400 desktop to retrieve data lost on a backup? best goes to most in-depty answer, with diagram link, thanks

I have noticed that my -12 volts on my PSU is averging about -6.93 v (after 24 hours of measuring). What does this mean? The -5 is also about low at about -3.6v. All my other voltages are within half a volt of where they should be. Thanks for the help.

Sensor Data: Motherboard Monitor 5
Motherboard: Abit IS7
PSU: i think is 550v but not 100% and i don't know the brand

To dispell the obvious first question, I'm writing from someone else's computer.

My computer died after I did several updates all in one day so I don't know which it was. I updated Norton, Office, and Yahoo IM. But the real question isn't which did it.

It won't boot AT ALL. It does a beep sequence (5,1,2,3) and the lights in the back (YYGG) both indicate a memory R/W error. It is a Dell Dimension 8200 if that is important. I pulled and reseated the memory and have tried all sorts of other things (unplugging and waiting before I plug back in, etc).

First off, is there any reason to believe that investing in new memory modules would solve this problem? I wonder if something else caused them to fail and it would do the same to new ones.

Next, do you think the information on my hard drive can be saved? I know, I should've backed it up, 20/20 hindsight. Can it be hooked up to another computer as a slave to pull the my documents folder onto CDrom?

Any other ideas or comments?
