I own a 2002 Compaq Presario (not sure what model, my dad bought it for me at a Mega-one-stop shopping center for $200, so it's a bit crap. Only reason it lasted this long was I had the Geek Squad trip it out six months after my dad gave it to me) that currently has a AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor in it (I'm not sure about the motherboard). A few years ago I updated the video card to a Raedon 9800 and added more RAM to it. Recently the computer has been crashing, freezing and stalling like an S.O.B. and a friend of mind suggested upgrading the motherboard/processor. I will more than likely have to update the power supply and cooling system as well, but what are some good motherboard/processor drives out there, average prices and quality. Thanks in advance.

Most likely the problem is your outdate motherboard.but what i suggest is getting a new sytem altogether.you'll need a new system to keep up with the increasing demands of applications n games.you cld try building your own too.save a lot of money that way. check out www.tomshardware.com for great info for choosing parts.all the best man

Your system is already upgraded to the max. Hence, the crashing and burning - in fact there are some serious hardware conflicts going on.

Instead of buying one on the cheap end, and putting so much money into it, you could have either had one custom built for you or purchased a brand new lower end model that would have given you more power than what your good-intentioned dad bought.

Do not purchase the motherboard/processor for the older technology of the rest of the system - you will not get your money's worth. By the time you spent the money for the mobo & CPU, for not much more, you could have an ENTIRE system. BTW, you WILL have to upgrade the PS & cooling system as well - not much left except memory & drives.

Look around and buy a new system - don't throw new money on old technology. Right out of the box, your PC was ALREADY obsolete.

First I would suggest cleaning the inside of the PC. Heat can make computers do strange things. Make sure you clean the heatsinks while your are in there.
Check to see that all the fans are turning, including the video card.
Do a drive wipe. Not just a reformat. Wipe the drive with KillDisk*. If that is not an option I would post a HJT (HighJackThis) log** and have an expert look at your system. Removing malware may and often does increase preformance.

Your sytstem was purchased in 2002 and you have added video card . Now spending any more money on this system is going to be a waste . The best suggestion I could give is dispose of this old machine and buy a new one.

If you've added memory that isn't compatable that can cause issues. Get yourself a barebones system and move your parts to it. Order a motherboard that takes the equipment you presently have and save money. Also make sure it will accept the memory you have.

If you have to ask the questoin, you are probably better off with a new system with at least 80 Gb hard drive, 512 Mb ram or better, and at least 1 G Hz speed..
