I am getting a new computer, and it has two sticks of 512. IT also has 4 RAM slots though, and so I was wondering if I could put the stick of 1 gig I already have in it with the other 512s. Would I get 2 gigs of memory? Would my computer simply fail to recognize some of the memory? Would my computer crash? Any insight would prove helpful.

Well your new one will most likely have DDR2, so if your old RAM is DDR2 it will work, if it is anything else it won't. As for the 1GB stick with two 512 sticks, it is not optimal setup but will work perfectly fine.

I did it,, using different ram chips with different bus speeds in two slots,, and i ended up struggling with lines and crashes on monitors and computer,, in the end,, i changed it,, but still the same,, which told me that it damaged my motherboard permanently,, so better get a single larger slot or two/four slots of same make,,, if they are of same make and same bus speed ,,, then no problem at all.

Usually memory cards are installed in pairs, so you would need another 1Gb card. Also you need to ensure that the memory you install is compatible with the machine and the memory already in there.

Crucial (www.crucial.com/uk/) have a memory configorator that will tell you what memory you need for your make and model of PC.

It might work, and the memory will add together.

hi,

i agree with chuck, the memory you put in has to be compatible with your computer, so you cant have different types. you can check by reading the model on the ram chip itself thats already installed and look for the same one but in memory size you want.

i got mine from ebay obviously i got the one thats right for my computer. real cheap as well.

best of luck. take care.x

Go to the web site for your laptop's manufacturer or read the book that came with it. Each machine has different specs.

If the ram is the same type, i.e. ddr 3200 then it should work.
