I will be removing the hard drive from my dell dimension 8400 desktop, but i am unsure of where the hard drive is specifically, in the tower. (CNET has pictures of interior, but not lines showing me what is what part). i also need to know which wires i need to remove. will someone kindly supply me with a link that shows me arrow lines to how i can take this drive out, without damaging it or its components? any tips on tools needed also appreciated. do you think this hard drive can be co-mounted inside of my dell xps 400 desktop to retrieve data lost on a backup? best goes to most in-depty answer, with diagram link, thanks

It's quite easy.... just make sure you are grounded somehow... like touching the metal casing of your computer will do.... make sure the power cord is unplugged.

When you remove it... there are 2 cables... the IDE (seatbelt), and power (4 pronged cord). There are probably screws in the side which hold the hard drive in place... remove these... don't use a magnetic screw driver.

The hard drive is pretty easy to find... it will be up against the front of case where the cd drives are... just below those and below the floppy drive most likely. It's pretty obvious... you'll see it when you open up your case.

If you are looking at your computer from the ouside it will be something like

CD DRIVE 1
CD DRIVE 2

FLOPPY DRIVE (if you have one)

HARD DRIVE (this is the one you don't see from the outside of the case)
