It will do the job yes, although there are many free programs that do the same thing just as well, if not better.

McAfee messed my computer up. It did great when it was only anti-virus. However, it's added anti-spyware and other things that just didn't work well. A friend recommended Norton's and I have been very satisfied with it.

McAfee has Anti-spyware and Anti-virus protection built in. It's a fairly good security suite. However, it's not the best in class for anti-virus or spyware.

Free products work well, but I prefer to construct my "security suite" from best in class software.
Based on fairly reliable sources:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,126890/article.html
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1989429,00.asp
Spyware Sweeper is consistently rated the best spyware deterrent.
Like others have said, there aren't any anti-virus apps that can cover ALL viruses. Again you can only trust that those who know more and test these things are reliable. Along those lines I use bitDefender.

If you want to add a firewall, ZoneAlarm Free is highly regarded as the best available.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1864623,00.asp
If you prefer all free software, download.com has a great reference page:
http://www.download.com/Best-free-security-and-spyware-software/1200-2023_4-5163183.html?tag=hed
On that page is another piece of software in my security suite; Spyware Blaster. It keeps track of spyware links/websites and stops your browser from loading them in the first place if you accidentally surf to a problem site.
To recap, my pieced together "best in class" security suite consists of:
Anti-virus - BitDefender (pay)
Anti-spyware - Spy Sweeper (pay)
Personal Firewall - ZoneAlarm Free Edition (free)
Other - SpywareBlaster (free)

I've used McAfee Internet Security for 4 years. I haven't had ANY spyware, adware or viruses in 4 YEARS! As long as it's kept up-to-date and as long as you scan every file you download BEFORE you open it, then you'll never have a problem...

For the most part Mcafee does its job. The only problem is over time HDDs get things built up on them and start to slow down. Be sure to use Disk Clean-Up often (Start>prgrams>accessories>system tools) and Disk Defragmentor (same location) to keep speed at its "best". Eventually, its a good idea to format your computer and reinstall programs. Be sure to save important files to a CD before you format though.

McAfee is a great program, in fact, one of the very best however, it's made to find, remove and keep your computer safe from viruses. Unfortunately, today we have Trojans and their Varients, Browser Hijackers, Keyloggers, Worms, etc that do probably 100 times more damage than viruses. If I can help in any way, hit me on dumbbutt4321@yahoo.com and I'll help you one on one with any particular problems that you might be having. The top 5 protective programs on the market are free to the public and i'll be happy to help you with them. Larry. (Radio Shack 01-9590)

H no! New viruses are written daily! How can ANY protection software protect if it doesnt realize the virus is out yet? Get a clue! Everyone thinks this software protects you from everything! It gives a user a false sense of protection! Their IS NO SOFTWARE THAT PROTECTS YOU FROM EVERYTHING! The best protection you can have is realizing where this crap comes from! P2P sites, dumass files sent to you by unknowing friends, etc....I am not telling you not to use it, I am simply stating dont depend on it!
