once your computer is up and running.
click start > run
type msconfig
press OK
click on STARTUP tab.
Uncheck all program entries which you do not need at startup. There is no harm, you can enable it later if you find out that you need to. Press OK.
The next step is to see if you have programs that are unnecessarily occupying your computer.
go to start > control panel > add/remove programs
Read through the list to identify the programs that you do not need. Remove/Uninstall them.

Clean your computer. It should NEVER take that long. Start out by cleaning out your Internet Temporary Files Under Tools (on top here) Then, by using your System Tools under Accessories in your All Programs. Defragment your computer. Open your computer (the tower) and blow out all the dirt and dust that you have in there, you will see it). Run a virus scan (www.avgfree.com). If your computer is 6 years old or older, it's probably just the hardware wearing out, time for a new one, bud! Good Luck!

if your system is modern enough and you think XP should not be taking so long to boot up, try updating your drivers and installing the latest security patches from Microsoft. Also try checking for viruses and adware / malware.
In case none of these things solve your problem, try re-formatting your system. If even that does not work, it is most likely a hardware problem.

Log your machine into safe mode and restore it to an earlier date when it was working fine. If that does not work try to remove any new installed hardware and also remove any discs in your rom(s).

If you were using an updated virus scan AND a firewall, then you wouldn't be asking this question now. Live & Learn
