did u install the sound card drivers?
also check the connections as well

If you installed the sound card drivers (if you have volume control next to the clock on your task bar), make sure your speakers settings match the speakers you have (analog or digital)
Open the volume control mixer, click advanced, click digital output only. If it doesnt work, take off the check mark.

You will need to re-install the soundcard drivers if they are on board you will need to find which chip set they are and then download appropriate one from manufacturers website generally VIA or if you bought your pc they should have provide a driver disk containing this . Give more specific details i.e motherboard make and model and weather or not sound is on board i might be able to find a link

check if you have your drivers CD with you. most operating system packages are not included with sound devices' driver. if you are using windows, take look at control panel to check sound device you are using before re-formatting your computer. if you didnt have the driver's installer you still can download it from it's website.
