My computers proceesor is running near 100% all the time. I am fairly confident I have eliminated most if not all spyware. I have minimized my startup programs and my memory usage seems normal during operation. The computer is lagging but I have scoured the files (even hidden ones) and I can't find anything that seems out of the ordinary. One thing I notice to is that my processor fan is going nuts and is very loud m,os of the time, is this a related problem to the processor? I'm just about to back-up and wipe the drive. Does anyone have any easier suggestions? Am I missing something?

I'm taking a wild guess here and saying your running Norton AV or Norton system works. If this is the case uninstall Norton. Go to the website and get their removal tool in the event that you are unable to remove it from Ad and remove programs. Norton has a bad habit of breaking in this fashion. If you are not running Norton then I would look at dust build up in your computer. If thats the case clean up the dust. but with processor usage of 100% there is a program running somewhere that is causing the system to run full tilt all the time. creating a Hot state. that issue needs to be resolved. Task manager should tell you what program is using all your processor. I still suspect you are running Norton on the PC though. Thats your most likely cause.

If you've checked your system for spyware and are sure that no spyware lives in your drive, than breakenschidt has a very good point. Before buying though, remove the cpu fan and and make sure it is clean, than lubricate with cpu silicon. I have come across many HP/Compaqs where I've had to do that and was successful. If by any chance your running Lotus Notes, than there lies your problem. Certain versions of Lotus Notes have this bug when installed with Windows XP. If Lotus is not on your system, then disregard. Good Luck.

Replace the fan. It's simple. It might be making your processor run hot. Go to http://www.download.com/2001-20_4-0.html?tag=stbc.gp

Get Ad-Aware and SpywareBlaster. They're free and will help prevent spyware and remove other bad invaders.

Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del, go into task manager. Which process is chewing up all of the processor time? If you're staying near 100% something is the culprit...

YOU SHOULD GET SOME FREWARE LIKE SPYBOT S&D OR CLEANUP. IT MIGHT HELP AND IT IS FREE.
IF NOT, BACK UP ALL YOUR FILES AND DO A CLEAN INSTALL OF YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM.
