Ive just bought a second hard-drive from my machine.

I currently have a 160 gig installed as a master and Ive just added my new 160 gig as a salve.

Ive booted up the machine and in the setup, ive set it up so both IDE devices are on AUTO.

I then restarted my machine, went into my computer, and only my master drive shows up????

have I done something wrong?

In bios, both Hard-drives show up.

Thanks for you help, I will check in the disk management to see if I can format it through there.

cheers

on the backside of your hard disk, next to where you plug in the cables, is a jumper - set it to slave on the new hard disk

then, if you still can't see it, right click on My Computer and go to Manage -> Disk Management - the drive probably hasn't been allocated and formatted yet.

No. Your new hard drive might not be formatted and the operating system might not be detecting it. If the system is picking up the drive, it should be visible through the BIOS. If it is, but you cant see it when you're in your operating system, try using PARTITION MAGIC. That should recognise any drive and format it using the appropriate file structure. If the drive isn't recognised through BIOS, then your settings are wrong somewhere.

There is a good chance that your 160GB slave hard drive is not formated yet.

Right click your "My Computer"
Select "Manage"
Select "Disk Management"
You should then be able to see two160GB hard drives. One with your Operating System on it and the other, which has not been formated (unallocated). Right click your new 160GB hard drive and select "Format". make sure to use NTFS. Do not make this hard drive "Active". The Active hard drive is the hard drive with your Operating System. I hope this helps.

You need to partition and then format the drive before Windows will see it...To partition the drive, open the command line and type fdisk, choose the new disk and follow from there...To format the drive, use the command format d: (or whatever the drive letter is...

On the same IDE channel? If you added it on another IDE channel maybe you don't have a master there...

Try to go into bios and detect the drive, if everything is connected correctly you should see it.

Check your cables also.

Oh, and it won't show on "My computer" until you format it.

make sure that first of all they both have power, second that they are both connected via the IDE cables, third make sure that the jumper on your second hard drive is set to slave, (its on the back beside the IDE connection slot) and also check your hardware manager. You might need to manually install the hard drive before the computer will recognise it. (MAKE SURE THAT WHEN WORKING INSIDE YOUR MACHINE YOU EARTH YOURSELF OTHERWISE YOU WILL CAUSE ELECTRO-STATIC TO RUIN YOUR MOTHERBOARD AND OTHER INTERNAL COMPONENTS. Try touching your finger to the PSU (Power Supply Unit).

You need to change the jumper setting on the back of your 'salve' HDD to indicate it is a slave. Look at the HDD and see the diagram on it. The HDD is prob set to master.

right click on my computer icon on your desktop, select manage
click on disk management and your slave drive should be here as unallocated; you will need to create a new partition

don't mark it as active unless you have loaded a second OS on it
