What's a sure-fire way to determine that a motherboard is defective?

What are the most common indicators that a mobo is bad? i.e. how will the computer act if the mobo is bad?

My current (crap) operating system is win xp pro, 999mhz, 128mb ram, and a maxtor hard drive 20 gig which makes loads of noise..

I recently broke my new pc but if i duplicate the hard drive on the maxtor 40 gig in my newish pc to resemble the xp i have in the operating system above what results can i expect to see the one in my new computer looks - runs really good..

Should i tear it out an copy what i have now? and replace the loud one? Will it be faster??

I just ordered a new Dell system which comes with a 305 watt power supply. It has an AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+, 1.5 GB RAM (2 sticks DDR2), a DVD-ROM drive, and a 160 GB SATA hard drive. It doesn't have anything else, no modem, no floppy, no sound card--just the bare basics.

However, I also ordered a NVidia Geforce 7600GT graphics card, which I know is somewhat power-hungry, but not too much. Using this power supply calculator (http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculator.jsp), I entered all my information and it said that all my gear would require 245 watts. I just don't know if that's a good estimation, and I also don't know how many amps Dell's 12v rails have and whether it will be enough. Any help you can offer? Thanks.

I got it as a christmas gift last year and it worked fine. I bought cartridges for it and then it would print with mostly pink dark lines in whatever i printed, and then the black stopped working at all. now, neither black nor color work. it prints out a blank page. these are brand new cartriges and i only printed out 10 or 15 pages at the most before it started tripping.

does it matter what the brand of the computer is? for example if 2 computers were the exact same everything. the only differnce was that one was dell and one was hp would it matter which one you chose? or does it truley matter on what inside the computer?

and my second questions what company are out there that make computers?

dell
hp
gateway
emachines
.....any more??

even if its a crtappy compny if that firs question is answered and the brand donst matter id rather go with a crappy brand that has everything the good brands have but for cheaper

thanks

I am running Windows XP. Recently i defragmented my c:/ drive. I could finish defragmenting my files but it stated that some files couldnt be defragmented. However, when i try to view the files there were no files being shown.

I had researched and even run " chkdsk c: /f " but however the problem still exists.

What should i do?

It is an inspiron 2650. When I am entering texr for em's or answering a question here, or just im'ing someone. My laptop will scramble the words. I will be watching what I am typing both on screen & keys, & suddenly my curser will jump backwords & begin entering text or letters inside of another word! Am I doing something wrong? Or do all laptops do this? It's a good thing I have spell check! lol!

I used to have a Windows XP desktop. It came installed with Encarta and Microsoft Works, which had options for pie charts and line graphs etc. Now, I bought a top of the line laptop that does not have Encarta and Microsoft Works does not have as many utlities, such as easy graph making. Is this because it is a laptop or because Windows wants me to buy Microsoft Office, which they do because my computer tells me everytime I enter Microsoft Works? I can't even make a powerpoint without buying Microsoft Office, which came installed on my friend's Mac for free. I guess my question is "Is Windows picking on laptop people or what else is going on?"

Hi,
I had a computer desktop which ran great for years. Anyway I put the wrong rated fuse in the plug, the insides were also heavily covered with dust. I plugged it in and turned it on. It then made a strange whirring noise and smoke started coming out of the casing!!!! I ripped out the power cable from the back straight away
I'm guessing the power supply is shot. I'm thinking maybe the motherboard is too?
I would really like to get the computer up and running again-It had an old 1.8GHZ Intel Pentium 4 chip in, as I remember 1GB (1000Mb) Ram with a standard sound and graphics card.
Which items could be shot? Is there a method of testing them without owning a voltmeter?
How much would to cost to repair, of a rough guide anyway.?
Is it possible to save the information that was on the hard drive - It had a lot of college work which would be handy to keep hold of

I also live in the UK so only English prices would be helpful, not dollars

Thanks in advance

I have a dell demension 4600c and one time it got turned off before it shut down because the power went out, then it would not turn back on, so i got the hard drive replaced, then a few months later the same thing happened. Everytime the power gets cut of to the computer while it is on the computer breaks down, i want to get it fixed but i would like to know why it does this becuase i have another computer and this never happeneds. I admit i dont know that much about computers so if anyone can help me i would really like to know why this happends and what i can do about it before i spend a bunch of money to get it fixed just so it can happen again

My boat anchor computer is stuck in MS-DOS. I have tried typing in win, with no results other than it restarts and goes right back into MS-DOS. I also type exit with the same results. Yes my computer is a little old and has about 420 MB of total hard disk space.

I am not planning on taking one anywhere, if I get one, I am just wanting it for around the house.
Yet, is it too big and awkward to even do this for very long?
If I am laying on the couch?
Also , do they get too hot? What is the reason that laptops get soo hot?
