what is your processor speed?

You might try running avg anti-virus, and avg anti-spyware. spyware is a common cause of computers lagging and locking up.

Also allocating more virtual memory will help your computer deal with memory usage.

Another thing would be to cut down on the number of back ground programs you have running all the time. the icons by your clock should be 8 or less. In the case of most computers there are a lot of unnecessary programs using memory.

Also don't forget to make sure that all your RAM is being used. When you check under My Computer like people are saying, make sure that matches the amount you have in your machine. Some configurations and types of RAM may not work with some motherboards. (It matters whether the module has chips on one side or both sides, for example)

And how long have you been running on your current installation? (Windows, I presume?) As time goes on, you can accumulate little changes (and spyware, and fragmentation) and unneeded crap to the point that it's easier to reinstall than it is to fix it. You could see an improvement in performance after you reinstall. I usually do it once a year just because. (though sometimes it's because things get corrupted)

frequently talking, doubling the video memory to 512MB is more beneficial advantageous than basically getting swifter get admission to to 256MB. besides the undeniable fact that, there are a number of of alternative elements inclusive of video processor %, type of parallel pipes, etc. All different issues being equivalent, the swifter 256MB at DDR3 would carry out more beneficial advantageous in trouble-free terms in second portraits or per chance some 3D video games at low decision and colour intensity. As with maximum pc questions, the answer beings with, "It relies upon on what you want to do with it." For an in intensity and quite independent prognosis of the "how" and "why" behind image card performance, inspect Tom's Hardware handbook utilising the source link decrease than.

The words "older comp" catch my eye. How old is the "older comp"? What speed is the processor? What speed is your memory? Is your video card truly compatible with your system board?

What type of web browsing has this computer been used for?

Have you scanned for and removed ad-ware? Spy-ware? Viruses?

Your page file (swap file) (your OS should have only one) should be setting itself automatically to your memory (ram) size.

A defrag is only one step in many towards truly fine-tuning your system for optimum performance.

Probally the fact that a video card and more ram is not enough if your cpu is old . Today a 2ghz or faster is the standard. How fast is yours??? right click on my computer to see.

You may need to format your computer, it sounds like you have a system error. Aslo the CPU power is important, if your CPU speed is above 2Ghz, then everything should run just fine.

Well the processor would also help upgrading you have everything maxed out but your computer is as fast as the slowest part. It would probably also require u to change ur motherboard.
