I am not planning on taking one anywhere, if I get one, I am just wanting it for around the house.
Yet, is it too big and awkward to even do this for very long?
If I am laying on the couch?
Also , do they get too hot? What is the reason that laptops get soo hot?

ALSO, WHAT ABOUT A 14.1" LAPTOP?
ARE THEY NICE BECAUSE THEY ARE SO LIGHT ?
DO THEY HAVE NICE SIZED SCREENS ALSO?

A 17" screen would be sweet although Im happy with my 15" widescreen. An extra 2 inches won't make that much of a difference especially around the house. I bring my laptop everywhere so I needed something that would fit in my school bag. The reason many laptops get hot is because of the battery. There have been recalls on some laptops because of the batteries getting too hot so you might want to look into which companies they were. I have my hpdv5000 and its prime. Although not the best for gaming, I use it mostly for college.

I'd say no not normally a 17" laptop is fine. Personal experience tells me this but then again I'm big and ugly enough to not mind generally. Whatever laptop your thinking about you should be able to find the weight on-line somewhere to get an idea of the weight and how heavy it is. Heat wise laptops are enclosed and the only reason your computer doesn't get hot is there is air around it not a warm body and it had much bigger fans. if you have this laptop doing any hard work I'd suggest putting it on a little stand on a desk but for general use like answering e-mails or browsing the web should be fine just don't give yourself an injury through overuse in a position which isn't good for you.

I'm using a Dell Latitude C610 with a 14.1 inch and i find very light and easy to use. I do have a Dell Precision M50 (15.1) and a Dell Inspiron 9300 (17") screens they are quite heavy and are best for the desk...

My C610 does not have wireless and only has a P3 1Ghz 20gb hd 348mb ram as its 5 years old ....but i have had this laptop on-line for up to 9 hrs without any problems, no heat no problems , the fans do come on now and again for about 1 min but, you can hardly hear it

but the newer ones are much higher spec

you can also choose between 14 and 15" screens..

There a lot of notebooks out there that have desktop processors in them and they are the ones to avoid as they get very hot. the ones to go for are (P4m, Centrino, CeleronM and Core Duo) mine is a P3 m (m for mobile)

I have a 17 " acer and it is a bit big to have on your knee mind you i am only little , i have mine on a little table at the side of the couch which is great but i some times use a lap tray this helps as you get a better air flow than when it is on your knee , hope this helps you decide

You'll find you don't need such a big screen with it on your lap, as you're that much closer to it.

Having said that, having it on your lap is not the best idea in the world (despite the name!), as the softness of ,er, your body tends to block the vents - they tend to run hot anyway. It's OK for short periods, but it's better on a hard surface.

Don't put it on your lap if your a guy.. Your testicles will melt..

I used to have the habit of lying down on the bed with the laptop on my stomach, until I had a really hot buring sensation in by belly button - that felt like a hot fluid ahad leaked from the battery.

Hurt like hell for a long time.

yes it is quite heavy but most laptops are when they are on your knee.

as for the size well tht is up to how comfortable you want to be

as for getting hot, it depends on whether the vents are on the side as mine are or whether they are underneath, if underneath then they do get hot because you are blocking the intake n outlet

think of it like being an hairdrier lol block the end and watch the filiment glow red

I have a 15.4" laptop and it is fine. The reason why they get hot is the work the CPU does make a lot of heat in a small area.

I have got one and now i wish i bought a small one, possibly a 14" or even smaller. Its ok to have in the house but out and about......not for me.
Normally overheats coz the fans are blocked with dust. I take the back completely off and hoover carefully all the fans and fins.....works a treat for me?

no it should be fine just make sure that when u are seating on the couch that it gets plenty of air underneath so it doesnt over heat, now i think it is not going to be the lightest lap top u will find but its not going to weigh like alot.

overall i think u should be fine.
