My boat anchor computer is stuck in MS-DOS. I have tried typing in win, with no results other than it restarts and goes right back into MS-DOS. I also type exit with the same results. Yes my computer is a little old and has about 420 MB of total hard disk space.

Edit C:/msdos.sys.
Change the line BootGUI=0 to BootGUI=1 and save it.
Reboot.

Depending on what the tech specs for the system is, would depend on whether it comes with that O.S. and Office. Without seeing the specs noone can answer this. But most of the time the O.S's are included in the price of the system. Vista is too new, and there are alot of bugs that need to be worked out, drivers that need to be compatible with that operating system. My recommendation would be stick with an XP system with the option to get a free upgrade to Vista later on. Same with Office 2007 its completely different that Office 2003. But on the personal level I like the layout and feel of Vista. It allows you to do so much more than the previous Windows Operating Systems. However I would not advise upgrading nor buying Vista at the present time.

First at the prompt type dir /p then hit enter. Look for the windows start up file it should end in exe. If it is win98 then you have to type in win98 to get it to start. The reason for the /p is to get it to display one screen at a time. If that doesn't work restart your computer and as soon as it begins to start. Push the f-8 key. Keep on pushing it until the screen changes. It should get you a list of start ups, One of which should be safe mode. select the safe mode and then hit enter. when it starts go immediately to scandisk and run it. then restart your machine. If we all could have new machines it would be nice but life ain't that way.

WOW! Your computer isn't a little old, it's a lot old. My be time for a new computer. As for your problem. You have the right idea, but, you must be in your windows folder. Under your "C:\" promp type CD space Windows (CD Windows) then press enter. This should put you into your "Windows" folder. You should be able to type "WIN" now so that it takes you back to your Windows environment. It's been awhile so hope this works for you.

did the computer run in to an error - while it was posting, or while it was at the initial boot sequence?
