I have a dell demension 4600c and one time it got turned off before it shut down because the power went out, then it would not turn back on, so i got the hard drive replaced, then a few months later the same thing happened. Everytime the power gets cut of to the computer while it is on the computer breaks down, i want to get it fixed but i would like to know why it does this becuase i have another computer and this never happeneds. I admit i dont know that much about computers so if anyone can help me i would really like to know why this happends and what i can do about it before i spend a bunch of money to get it fixed just so it can happen again

Matters what your definition of turning on means. No power, lights, noise, no spinning fans, ect, or turns on but dosn't boot into windows? You were suckered for the harddrive exchange, that probably would be the LAST issue/failure. Unplug the power cord from the computer for a few minutes. then back in hold the power button in for 7 seconds, see if it will turn on again. other then that, You need to find a real computer store and have them diagnose it. Burned fuse, power supply bad, or as simple as resetting the power of the unit (had that happen a few times to a few customers). If not booting into windows (shows it has power), maybe just corrupted file, just needs to be restored.
As for power outage, get a UPS unit (battery backup) and the computer will stay on 10-20 minutes without power.

First of all I suggest your pc be plugged into a surge protector that is strong enough made to protect a pc and a battery back up. Both can be found at pc stores. That way when power goes out your battery back up kicks on automatically and your pc stays on. You then have time to save what you are working on so you dont lose files. Then as soon as you can, you then shut your pc down properly until power is back on. Also If you will be away from pc for a while then I suggest shutting it down yourself so that way if you are not home and power goes out, you do not have to worry.
Not sure exactly why your hard drive is being killed when your power goes out, usually it will burn out the power supply box first in your pc if there is a surge from loss of power in your house.

Sometimes shutting the computer down without a normal Windows shut down will cause a problem because some files are not resolved properly. Try turning on your computer in "safe mode", (hold down the F8 key while the machine is booting up then select safe mode from the menu) When it comes up, do a normal computer shut down. That ought to fix it...

I would look at getting a better power supply for your computer, for example one that detects things like undervolting or overvolting, this way your computer will be protected. You can also get a UPS uninterpretable power supply which is basically a surge protector with batteries in it which will power your computer for a short while during a power outage so you can shut it off correctly.

well you prolly have a problem with your power supply, get a surge protector (not just a power bar) and that should solve your problem. But whats happening is, something is send a huge surge of electricity into you computer and since its a dell and probably an older one its power supply doesnt have the technology to supress that surge before it gets to the components.

It's time to invest in a computer battery back up. It will keep your computer on for a certain amount of time before cutting off the electricity to it during a power outage. This gives you time to shut down your computer properly to avoid this expensive and time consuming delema.
