"the following tank is running low" --which is what it said when I had my last cartridge in the printer. Is there something I need to do after just putting in a new ink cartridge?

You need to go to printer properties (Control Panel>Printers. Select your printer and select properties.) Someplace in there, will be a reset or the like. Basiclly telling your pc that you changed the cartridge.

I used to have a lexmark where you had to "install" the cartridge and the printer would print some test pages and you could line everything up and make sure the colors were right, check out your owners manual or the manufactures website.
