How come some computers are really slow?

There could be several reasons ...

Not enough RAM
Old hardware & operating system
Lots and lots of programs installed
Not enough video memory
Hard drive almost full OR needs to be defragmented
Virus or spyware infection
Slow or dial-up Internet access (if it's an Internet application being slow)

But you can't really tell which it is without more information. If **your** computer is having speed issues, add more details to your question.

The obvious answer is slower processor.

Somewhat less obvious is lack of adequate RAM and/or hard drive space/speed.

The elusive answer is some computers have too many "memory resident" programs - that is they continuously run, usually after startup. Checking the Task Manager will reveal most of these. These can include spyware and potentially virii, but also legitimate programs such as Adobe Acrobat and others. In computers with limited resources (proc/ram/etc) they can slow it down.

On older computers, hard drive fragmentation can cause slowness.

I had McCaffe Security Suite on my computer over the weekend.

My Four meg(£24.00per month) Broadband connection - became slower than Dialup.

The computer took an age to boot.

Everything slowed down massively.

I couldn't remove it quick enough (even though it also took about a hour to uninstall itself).

Now - all is fine.

1. Bad brand of comp.
2. not lots of ram
3. Could have some sort of virus, making it slow.
4. If you have lots of programs on comp (Like not having enough ram)
