Most of your business applications were written for both programs, but costs directed attention towards the IBM compatible computers. Mac's were too high in the price arena. Not to mention Bill Gates and Steven Jobs worked together and then Gates left to form Microsoft with technology that he learned from Apple. He priced his product lower and worked with the manufacturers of IBM and compatibles because there was still some bad blood.

Sotware and hardware... In the early days Apple came out with a new model every 3 months but none of the software was backward or forward compatible. Software writers understandably had a big problem spending months and thousands of dollars to find that their software was superceded before it even came to market.

Today's Super Mega PC,s will still run software designed for the original IBM PC, so the software engineers feel much more comfortable with the IBM platform.

Apple went the "educational" path, giving free Apples to schools, thinking that kids would stay with the Apple when they entered the business world, but the availability of most major software being for the PC soon made them change their minds.

The IPOD is a consumer item which operates on a totally different marketing model.

Have you looked at a price tag on a decent MAC? Compared to a basic Dell in most cases there is a big difference. Apple did a great job marketing the IPOD, and it just proved to become a standard in the MP3 world.

Marketing.

Apple PC's were on the scene first, and worked better.
Bill Gates was a brilliant strategist and marketed the crap outta his DOS (that he purchased from somone else btw)

Upon Steve Jobs return to Apple, they turned their attention to other tech toys.. MP3 players, phones, and the like.

Apple still makes computers and MS still makes the other stuff.

They just market them differently, and it's apparent that Apple is kickikng the snot outta Gates and Co. in the tech toy department.

Apple macs have a standard graphic set, that (unlike general pc's) enables the look of a graphic to be perfectly replicated throughout the whole apple mac range. A office full of apple macs then gives a stable platform for professional artwork to be shared. This basically makes them a must have for graphic designers etc.

For developers and basically anything else you can forget it with Apple Macs.

Because they have finally made something that people want, a music player on-the-go and Microsoft stole the market as all new computers come with Windows so everyone got used to using it.

Macs are only really good for image applications.

Price--their computer is way overpriced and the quality is not that superior to justify the difference.
MP3--overpriced but lacks competition still.Several other manufactures entering market. Apple will have a choice, adjust pricing or lose the market as happened with their computers

lack of backwards compatibility & price. also it doesn't help that apple still releases new versions of its software (itunes - QT ) for windows 2k but for Mac users it only works on the very latest versions of OS X, to force Mac users to upgrade.
