It really comes down to how you treat the computer after the purchase. If you get good anti-spy-ware, anti-virus, and firewall applications and use them, your computer will last a long time and remain fast.
I personally recommend Dell computers. I have 2 Dell laptops and would purchase another if I had the need. They have great deals you can combine with coupons. They have a 20% off $999 laptop coupon until 2/15. It is available at http://www.24houredeals.com/Dell-coupons-23-mer.html
Good Luck.

Dell and HP are the two titans of cheap yet effeicent computers. You can customoize them pretty well for a good price. It also depends on if your plaining on buying a desktop or laptop. Laptops are alwasys more expensive. If your getting a desktop, I would buy a barebone kit from Tigerdirect.com. They give you really good specs for a cheap price. The only catch is that you will not get customer support and you actually have to assemble the computer yourself. The only thing I would warn you against is from buying an emachine. They are terrible and will last only a few months! Don't let their price fool you!

Firstly, I doubt very much that you would ever find 2 PCs with the same inards from different companies, I repair PCs and can tell you though, HP outranks the rest of them due to its ease in restoring to factory condition with the press of a few keys! You dont even need to put the restore disk in! Their support is better than anyone elses too. The worst in your list would be Dell!
Apple? LOL! This person wants a computer! Not a Fisher Price toy!

If you have the money, I would recommend getting an Apple.
But if you want to stick with PC's, I would definitely pick Sony, though they are a little bit expensive, they last a VERY long time.
Toshiba is also a good brand, they are also not that expensive.
If I had to choose a HP or a Dell, I would choose the Dell because, overall, it's better.

Other computer companies to look up are "gaming" computer makers such as CyberPower, ABS, Velocity Micro, Alienware, Voodoo, ZT Group.
Besides price, consider how well the company SUPPORTS their products. If they're bad at answering questions or helping you solve problems, the expense in dollars isn't worth the hassle.
Check to see what Consumer Reports says.

The best comp. company would be hp. But Dell comes out with a lot cheaper computers then a lot of other companies. (Like if two computers were the exact same with what's put inside them dell will
make it at a cheaper price.) It doesn't really matter what company a computer comes from, but if you get dell or hp they are really trusted.
Diff. Comp.
Dell-(cheap, and actually are very trusted, come out with a lot of good comps.)(i would recommend them)
Hp-expansive, but makes very good comps.(i would recommend them)
Gateway-(not sure)
Emachines-(not sure)
Compaqs-(their ok, but im not to sure about them)
Toshiba-(only for notebooks)
Nvidia-(only came out with one new notebook)
Apple-(really expansive, but more simpler and safer)(i would recommend them)
Sony-(really thin and stylish-expansive)
Lenovo-(only notebooks- not sure how good their comps. are)
Acer-(not sure if their comps are good)

to answer your first question, it does matter what is on the inside of the computer because if you get any computer you see you don't know what could happen. and to answer your second, there is one company that i highly recommend. Apple. they make the best computers yet. just go to www.apple.com and click on shop.

Budget and use are the most important.
If you can afford one, I recommend a newer Intel macintosh - it will run both OSX and Windows. They are well made, and are generally configured nicely out of the box.

1st, no computer company makes the components that go into the computer. They simply have them ASSEMBLED.
The biggest concern, (if all components are alike or quite similar) is the company's warrranty & history of standing behind it.
