Tell him to do good work aroubd the house and behave, then when he gets a great grade or does someting really great, get the laptop for him as a surprise. (you can probably find a Vista basic for around $400 on sale, so just wait for a sale and read the sunday adds)

If hes only 11 going on 12 you as a parent could tell a best buy or circuit city sales person to give you the most low key computer If he wants just word processing and internet. You could have him do some "hard" chores around the house and then you would pay him accordingly. I just saw the vista part of the question. Vista requires tons of ram lots of hard drive space and a nice (expensive processor). Lowest price laptop that is vista capable will probably be around 600 bucks and up. good luck!

Odd jobs for neighbors, pet sitting, dog walking, rake leaves, wash cars plus give the kid an allowance for doing things around the house.
