I have heard that WGA can allow microsft to kill your computer remotely.(they have nearly shutdown my roomates XP system until he did a automatic update.we did not allow this update for two week until the computer was extremly slow) Does microsoft have the technologies to disable someones linux box? I fear a EULA disallowing someone from runing linux on the same home network that WinXP is hooked up to. They already put a 5 computer limit on your network(winxp pro has a 10 computer limit). How can they get away with telling you how many computers you can run?I talked with a microsoft rep and she told me that each computer does not have to be running a windows product and that there is a 5 computer limit per license on a single network. So if I put up a new web server my room mate would have to buy a second licence even thought Im not using a windows os.

i reformatted the disk and reinstall win xp pro, changed the nic, still cannot connect to the office network, the ping to the gateway times out and cannot ping any system on the network, no selection is made in the lan setting under inter options, the problem is same when i chose auto detect setting, can this be a problem with the board? i have tested the cable with another system and it works well.

I bought an Acer laptop 3 months ago. The wireless networking worked before (i was able to go to a hotspot, and connect to the internet using that signal).
But now, in a hotspot, I can see a list of wireless networks, and can get connected to a network. BUT WHEN I OPEN MY INTERNET EXPLORER, IT DOESN'T CONNECT TO THE NETWORK.
I use WinXP, and Internet Explorer 6.
Please help.

"(network) is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

That's the message I get when I try to view other computers on the network that I created and am the administrator of. So what did I do wrong? What's the problem and how do I fix it? Thank you for your time.

I only have a limited networking knowledge so bear with me here. this may be a stupid question...

My broadband comes into my basement where I have my primary computer that I use all the time and I want to hook my other two computers (which are next to eachother and upstairs) up to the internet. I bought a wireless router and had trouble getting a reliable signal upstairs (I assume because of the concrete and pipes) so I ran a cable through the wall to where my other computers are. I now have that cable plugged into one of the computers and it works fine, but I want both of them hooked up. Is there any reason why I can't just put a switch upstairs and run cables to each computer? Here's a drawing of how I want the network to look...

I obtained a cisco systems model uBR900. Any idea how to hook it up, or how much it is worth? It has 4 ethernet connections, 2 phone lines(v1+v2) and it looks like it has 1 main phone line, followed by an inlet that says"console". Thanks for the help.

What should I be connecting to where. (Wan from gateway to ethernet jack of internet modem?) Is anyone else out there using the same service?
