keygens are written by crackers, Not hackers. all you new generation people who are just getting into the computer world assume everything bad is done by a hacker and anything wrong with a computer is a virus.

a keygen is a program, written by a 'coder' who can be considered a 'cracker' or part of a 'cracking team'. the main point of the program is to mimic a program's key code validation process to make a valid key code. this is done by the intricate process of reverse engineering software, aka disassembling. you can find many keygens on what were once the great underground cracker sites. eg. www.andr.net, before non computer power users, who were not part of the original 'scene', became interested in acquiring registration keys to software that they didn't feel like buying. the original scene was to overcome the challenges presented by software manufacturers' registration or key code validation algorithms.

If you feel the need to explore information about these topics, search on www.wikipedia.org .

Thank you The_Amish for pointing out the fact that crackers are not the same as hackers. It's about time someone recognised the difference.

But a KeyGen does produce a keycode for a piece of software or program that requires it. Usually this is so that someone can use the software without paying for it. If you are being asked for a keygen then what is telling you you need to open one?

A lot of software, eg Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office, etc etc, needs a serial number to be typed in before it'll install or work. This is known as a 'key', and having one means that you paid for the software.

A keygen is a piece of software written by hackers / pirates which generates a random working key for you. This means that you can share copies of the software without all paying for it. Where to get one? The usual software downloading sources, bit torrent, IRC in particular. This site has info on those - http://www.slyck.com/index.php

Be careful though - a keygen is an executable file. It has been known for virus writers to release nasty viruses masquerading

It's a software application which will attempt to generate a "key" ie. unlock codes for applications you have downloaded without paying for. There are tons of key generators, google it or search on a torrent and take your pick. If you are looking for it on your pc just go to start/search, all files, and type "keygen" it'll show you where it is.

The term "keygen" refers to software that is used to generate installation keys for software in order to pirate the software. Software publishers are wise to this and are verifying the installation keys against their database of legal keys when you run the software. An excellent example of this is Windows Genuine Advantage.
