It sounds like Your Modem can not detect the Host OR You didnt reinstall Your Internet Modems Software that Was given to you. Sometimes Software comes with Your modem. But if you did install the New software Or you didnt get any Try these steps.

1st- open your ( Network Connections ) folder
Located in your control panel and look for a link that says network connections.

2nd- click on that link Or folder if its a folder.

3rd- right click on the connection thats which is Probably going to be ( local Area Connection )Which will also show under it your Ethernet cards name. Most of the time you might Have two connection types one being Ethernet the other being FireWire or IEEE just pick the Ethernet one.

4th-Make sure that its Active and it does not say Limited Connectivity. Either or When you right click on it a drop down menu will appear, click on the ( repair ) link in the drop down menu.

5th- It will go through your settings trying to fix it.
Also make sure you check off both boxes when you right click on the Network connection type it will show your connection status in your Notification Area.

6th- If that does not fix your problem you will need to call the Company and they will have to Reset your Settings with you on the phone. Its very easy and will only take about 10-15 Min's on the phone.

9 out of 10 times when this happens or you get limited connectivity message below in your notification area Your Modem is not able to reach the HOST provider. Meaning it cant find YOUR " isp" Settings so it does not know you have service.

If this worked Leave a Feeback for me to read.

It sounds like it might be a problem with your firewall settings. Just as a quick means of checking, shut down your firewall and see if you can connect to the network. If you can, you need to restart your firewall and find a way to reduce the level of security to something like "Office Network" or "Home Network". This will allow your computer to communicate directly with other computers on the same LAN. Otherwise, your computer will constantly be refusing to accept incoming traffic (including any return signals from outgoing traffic, like pings or directory requests).

I had this very annoying problem when trying to Peer-To-Peer network my new Gateway laptop to my new Gateway desktop, and _noone_ that I asked was able to point me in the right direction until after I'd gone to great lengths to track the solution down on the internet. At that point, a coworker casually mentioned that this is a common problem that he has to spend hours fixing when doing a massive LAN party because firewalls default to the most secure configuration and most people don't ever realize that they might need to change them.

Here is a Microsoft XP newsgroup "Networking and the Web":

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.network_web&lang=en&cr=US

To post there you need a .Net Passport, but if you have a hotmail or windows live mail account then you already have one, just use the e-mail address and password to logon. If not you can create one at the logon page by clicking the link on the page or by opening User Accounts, selecting your account and clicking the link this account to .Net Passport link. Just follow the directions and you will be good to go. One item of note is that while in theory we are suppose to be able to use any existing e-mail account to use with the .Net Passport, it is in my experiance that it requires the hotmail or windows live mail account which is free but still, if you don't want one it is a hassle. Especially as if you don't use it for a month they close it.

I strongly reccomend utilizing the newsgroup provided as there are many IT professionals who provide help to those with less experiance. Just make sure not to cross post and to provide detailed information about your system and all steps you have currently taken to resolve the issue. These guys can get a bit testy in how people post and like to see that they are at least trying to help themselves, as they feel people learn more by doing stuff on their own than if it is spoon fed to them. Just tell them you have googled this and done a search of the knowlege base and of that newsgroup. In fact, do a search of the newsgroup for simular posts as there are a lot and you may be able to resolve the issue without posting yourself. It is easy to do as a search box is provided.

Good luck and have a great day and weekend.
