I bought an Acer laptop 3 months ago. The wireless networking worked before (i was able to go to a hotspot, and connect to the internet using that signal).
But now, in a hotspot, I can see a list of wireless networks, and can get connected to a network. BUT WHEN I OPEN MY INTERNET EXPLORER, IT DOESN'T CONNECT TO THE NETWORK.
I use WinXP, and Internet Explorer 6.
Please help.

Here are a couple of websites to get you started in the right direction. Each also has links to other network related resources so look around carefully. Also, doing a google search and a search of the Microsoft Help and Support Center would net you some viable resources too. Here are the website links:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/troubleshoot.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/maintain/connections.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx

Now, to access the Microsoft Sites you need a .Net Passport. If you have a hotmail, or Windows Live Mail account that is what you use. If you don't have one you can get a .Net Passport easily enough by using one of these two methods: 1. In User Accounts click on your account, then click on the link to Link Account with a .Net Passport. We are suppose to be able to use any existing e-mail account as the Passport, but sometimes individuals have a difficult time connecting that account, and are forced to open a hotmail or windows live mail account. That is what I had to do. 2. At the logon page just click the link to sign up for a hotmail account and it will be linked to your account as your .Net Passport. You just use your e-mail address and password to login to the network.

If you continue to have problems after reveiwing these resources feel free to utilize one of the Microsoft technical support newgroups. Be sure to post to only one and not cross post, and be specific on what the problem is, and the steps you have taken to correct it, as these technical guys can get a bit testy by newbies writing posts which basically state "Help-networking problme, can't get hooked up at hotspots!". You will need to provide your system configuration, such as OS, Network Adapter, ect. Here is a technical support newsgroup for "Networking and the Web":

Good luck and have a great day and weekend.

whenever you have connectivity problems you always want to check and see if you are getting an IP address first.

once you connect to the wireless network go to:

START > RUN > type in cmd
then type in ipconfig /all

make sure all fields have the appropriate data. then try to ping the default gateway. if you can ping the default gateway you should be able to access the Internet
