Etiquette - April 2007

At my house, I go around in my underwear. (I live with my dad and he does the same thing.) Yesterday, my mom brought me when she went to visit an old friend. The lady told me, plainly and clearly, to make myself at home. So I took off my shoes, pants, and shirt. My mom had a fit.

But the lady did say for me to make myself at home.

We're new house owners. Apparently, the neighbors don't seem to like us very much, and we don't speak French well, so it's another barrier. They're not hostile... The lady just doesn't speak to us, but the guy's a bit nicer.

We have suspected that their dog has snuck into our backyard before, but we haven't said anything. Imagine our surprise when we happened upon the 10-20 piles of smelly dog by-product on our side of the lawn... Should we have a talk with them about their little mutt, or should we just get a fence, get it over with?

I have a wonderful friend who is an intelligent, classy, sophisticated, and lovely woman. I would like to get to know her better, and if possible date her. But I don't want to offend her if she is a lesbian. I don't want to do anything to harm our friendship or professional working relationship.

I mean, not flushed, plugged with paper, crap or urine on the seat...Would people do any of that in their own home? I even had one guy throw toilet paper with crap on it into my cubicle while I was sitting there with my pants down...

I had a horrible job interview for a working professional position.
They paid for the airfare and hotel. When it came down to lunch,
they took me to a taco stand. Food was put on paper plates, plastic forks etc.

This type of job that I have been looking elsewhere, I was taken out to fine dining/fine restaurants.

What do you think of this place? I am turning down the job.

I had a debate with a friend a while back about this. I never courtesy flush, as I believe the fury of the smell is released at the same time the offending material hits the water and a courtesy flush is just a symbolic attempt to soothe the masses. Others insist that courtesy flushes spare others from the agony. What do you think?

I was on a packed train, so full we all had to stand in the bathrooms.

Two girls said they wanted to go in, so we all crammed into the vestebule. We could hardly breathe it was so squashed.

We could smell them smoking, so when the ticket inspector went past, I pressed the 'door open' button. It was one of those sliding doors that rotate slowly.

They got caught, fined and kicked off the train.

Nobody knew it was me.

ha.

I was in a classy restaurant and accidentally dropped my eating utinsel onto the floor. I wasn't sure what the proper etiquette was at that point. Do you pick it up or just leave it and ask the waiter for a new one?

Does this rule apply for food too? If I drop a cherry tomato or an olive and it rolls across the restaurant floor, what do I do? I surely don't want someone to slip on it.

He consistently walks through doors before women. I will open a door and he will walk on through. And on the elevator he will walk on and off before the women. Even when we are with clients who are female presidents and ceo's. Is there a polite way to bring this to his attention? It drives me nuts!

I think the reason why people act that way is because they are jelous. What do you think? I absolutely hate it when people are that way, though.

Please stop voting for Sanjaya on American Idol. I don't really care about the show or him, but I keep hearing that he's ruining the show and everyone's mad. Just stop voting for him so he gets eliminated and this **** stops. It's getting pretty annoying. Tell other people you know too.

I'm going to a birthday party today for a friend of mine and a friend of a friend who I don't know well. I have no problem picking out something for my friend, but I don't know what to get this other girl. I don't know anything about her really aside from that she's a newly wed. I don't want to show up with something cool for my other friend and a gift card for the other girl. Ideas? We're all in our mid to late 20's.
