Is it right that we are told we have to be ashamed of our bodies and cant show them off if we want to

I think it's mostly a lack of self control, rather than shame. In some places public nudity or at least topless for women is legal, however it's generally not practical 'cause you'd get too much of the wrong kind of attention. Regardless of whether the nude person (esp. female) was ashamed, they'd not be accepted by the rest of society.

It's not necessarily unhygienic, you don't shed anything from being topless, or well, we do lose skin cells all the time but that happens from bare arms, shoulders, heads, etc too, there's no hygienic difference between the tiny tank top many people already wear in summer and a totally bare chest (male or female). And for bottoms, in nudist places people carry a towel to sit on, that'd work.

Kids seeing it shouldn't be a big deal, non-sexual nudity doesn't harm children. I'm not a nudist but there are nudist places with families, it's not going to turn them into perverts... opposite if anything; forbidden fruits and the like....

As for fat people grossing people out, well, we don't require youths whose face is full of zits to wear a bag over their head. And fat people can legally wear those tiny tank tops I named earlier, which doesn't make *that* much of a difference.

So I think it's the self control issue that truly prevents those who would like to from going naked.

Because our stodgy and conservative Christian brainwashed society won't let us, and because you'll get arrested and fined if you do.(indecent exposure)

It's quite sad isn't it. The USA is always touting freedom and you just exemplified one of the many freedoms we don't have.

There are some nudist clubs that allow this and in other European countries they show naked people on national tv and don't have a cardiac arrest if someone happens to be naked in non-traditional places, but for the most part in the U.S.A. you're stuck with this forced law

However, trust me, you don't want most of Americans running around in public naked. Almost 70% of Americans are overweight-- not a pretty sight naked

Did you pose for one of Spencer Tunik's (famous art photographer that likes to photograph massive groups of people naked) art work pieces? ;)

Well, a lot of people don't need to be naked. Ugh. But for the rest of us, there are places. There are nudist areas in most states, always can hang out with the guys bare butted if you go to the Y.

It's not that people are ashamed of their bodies, but I personally don't want to see people naked. Secondly, it's really a hygiene issue too. People need to be clothed, especially in certain places, so they don't transmit diseases or bacteria. Think About It.

I think it is odd that if a girl with a smokin body walks into the store any time of year wearing a skimpy bikini or see-through shirt, no one says a damn thing. But when a less-than-attractive guy does it, he gets arrested for indecent exposure and is a "pervert". Hmmmm

Modesty can be beautiful too.
And plus you have something special to share with your loved one in private.

Because many of us are jealous that other peoples bodies look better than ours- and we don't want to have to deal with that. :)
