I had a debate with a friend a while back about this. I never courtesy flush, as I believe the fury of the smell is released at the same time the offending material hits the water and a courtesy flush is just a symbolic attempt to soothe the masses. Others insist that courtesy flushes spare others from the agony. What do you think?

Too late as far as I'm concerned. The offending piece of you know what has already permeated the air. Don't waste the water.

Courtesy Flush is flushing after the alpha turd under the assumption that it diminishes the stench. This does not diminish anything as the stench is sealed under the water. (Same as actual flushing seals the stench with a water barrier in the gooseneck. Only if it is left there for an hour or so OR the alpha turd is so large part of it sticks out of the water like a volcanic island will the toilet water begin to smell. Worse yet, when flushing, the lid should ALWAYS be down as the pressure of a flush creates a mist just like any waterfall and your butt has now been spritzed with nebulized excrement.

I think courtesy flushes are nessesary when you fear that you may clog the toilet if you don't. Also, flushing the offending material does lighten up the stench a bit. Makes it a bit more bearable until you finish.

Actually, with all the germs swimming around in that toilet bowl it's best to finish the job, zip up, flush and RUN! Those germs will shoot several feet into the air when you flush. Have a nice day!

depends on how much "offending material " is made. soemtimes you cant help but a courtesy flush. as for sparing others of the smell that is what they make air freshener for.

European toilets sometimes have a 'tray' so it lays up there... yes then it does help! I only courtesy flush when using those kind of toilets. If it's under water, I don't think it makes much difference, if at all.

I think it only helps to cover up other people's noises as they finish they business in a public toilet. But as for the smell I think it makes no difference at all.

LOL I think you should give that extra flush. Why let the devastation linger? My husband does it.
