Etiquette - March 2007

We were enjoying dinner in a relatively upscale Asian-fusion restaurant in Florida when a party of 6-8 women were seated nearby. Given that we were in a nicer area of town and the fact that they were nicely dressed, it didn't seem odd until . . .

They all started cackling and laughing and beating on the table and jumping up and running around. Other patrons, especially those nearby, seemed disturbed by their lack of cooth. Their commotion could he heard in the furthest corner of the room.

As we left, I wanted to ask if they were celebrating Stella getting her groove back, but I knew that it would be lost on them.

The day before, in a Chili's, people were letting their bare-footed toddler sit on the dirty floor.

Why do Americans, in general, lack the education to know what's appropriate behavior in public?

This sounds like a really nasty question, I know, but the editor of the magazine I work on (I'm the deputy editor) is utterly useless at her job and I have been on the receiving end of her lazy attitude, low standards, bad organisational skills and even her dishonesty for nearly two years. My publisher has been well aware of the situation for months and even called me into his office last week, after a very stressful time, to say he knows it's me who is holding the magazine together and that I should "hang in there." I don't really know what that means, but I know that if I continue to cover up this woman's blunders, she will never be dealt with properly. How can I keep my boss aware of her future errors without looking totally bitchy or complaining to him every five minutes? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I hate dumb lawsuits, and I am disappointed with people that do this to make their fast cash. If I spilt coffee on myself I sure would not sue the resteraunt I was in , even if I got scalded and scarred for life. Coffee is supposed to be hot remember? if someone else hurt me through neglect and carelessness then I would pause and see the kind of damage that has been done and if action needs to be taken.

Really, the hostility from some of these people....it's uncalled for. How misreable does one have to be to attack someone they don't even know?

I am in my late twenties and I am constantly asked my age by people I barely know, such as coworkers or people at church. I look old for my age, people usually say I look like I am in my thirties. I do not think I am old but I do not think that is is really any of their business. It tends to be women in their forties or fifties who ask me my age, which I think is strange because I would never think of asking their ages upon initially meeting them.

I do not mind friends knowing my age, but it just seems odd and intrusive for strangers to ask. How do I politely decline answering the question?

I don't have a knack for conversation. I'm an introvert. It's hard for me. I clam up and make everyone else uncomfortable, and I'm really bad at keeping a conversation going. Forget about starting one.

I generally have a hard time with social stuff. I tend to be pretty impassive, I don't say much. I'll smile sometimes, but I very rarely laugh. I naturally tend to speak in a monotone, and I think I can be a little too straightforward. I do have an overdeveloped sense of tact, but I'm not good at the standard bullshitting that people do.

How can I improve my social skills?

I have a friend who is loaded with money, but for some reason, each time I go to visit her, she gives me the tackiest of food. She even works next door to Marks & Spencer's, but I never see a nice cake from there for me at her home!! She will give me fairy cakes from the market and the cheapest Tesco's value ready salted crisps. When she comes to see me, I give her loads of stuff to eat - good quality stuff and I even earn less than her. Why do people do this? She has been like this for 20 years. Once she asked if I fancied a biscuit and when I said, yes please, she brought me just one jaffa cake in her hand for me! She is 36 for goodness sake.

I work in the service industry. The English are so polite, thanking me profusely for the fantastic service. Then they leave me 0.5 % of the bill as a gratuity. I end up paying back more to the restaurant, losing other tips I had already earned.

It's just the two of us in the office...

Most of the time he is not there, but when he is I find myself bossing him around to get the job done. The worst part is...he takes it! Sometimes I feel really bad about dominating him, but other times it makes me feel useful and strong.
Is this okay?

I am constantly having to deal with someone who clearly doesn't believe how insulting her comments are, especially when laughing at me after seeing how hurtful her words are.

If I say something and it is interpretted as hurtful, I apologize, immediately, and fix it.

They will stand there waiting for you to move before saying, "excuse me." or they give you the look, or they actually grab your cart & try to move it out of the way. What is with people? And if you smile at them, they don't smile. Is it a crime or something to do grocery shopping? What is everyone's problem?

We've talked to him, several times, we have asked him to park on the street, not in driveway next to our bedroom! but he forgets and ...we just give up. * what would you do?

Hello. I drive people around part time. A few women had a night out at a casino. I was dropping them off and the last one needed help to her door. She would have fallen a few times if I hadn't been by her side. She couldn't make it up her steps. I helped her in her house. Then she started looking at me like she wanted me to seduce her. I made sure she was sitting in a chair and then I left. I was nervous - she did say she had a boy friend.

Anyway - should I have made sure she was lying down? Should I have brought her to her bed? She didn't grop me or anything - but her looks said everything. Or was I right just to leave her sitting in case she did something she'd regret if she were sober?

Why don't people tip? We're paid 6 dollars an hour to watch your kids for an hour and a half... do everything a normal waiter would AND dance with your kids, serve your food on to your plate, and focus on nobody BUT you.

please! tip 10% at LEAST, if you have a 200 dollar party an extra 20 bucks to your hostess won't hurt - thats how we make our money and our managers get away with paying us 6!
