They will stand there waiting for you to move before saying, "excuse me." or they give you the look, or they actually grab your cart & try to move it out of the way. What is with people? And if you smile at them, they don't smile. Is it a crime or something to do grocery shopping? What is everyone's problem?

It all depends what part of the country you are in. Or if you are in a rural or suburban area.
Are you from a part of the country where things move kind of slow - and have you just moved to an area where things move a lot faster?
It is all about learning to adapt to your new environment. The people arn't monsters, they just have different ways of dealing with each other. You are just going to have to learn to adapt. Give your self some time.
Why don't you try joining some clubs in the area and meeting some people that way? They will be able to help you along.

I live in a small town and we don't have that problem here. We always talk to each other while shopping, and when I see someone with kids around my son's age (2 1/2) I ask them their recommendations on playgroups, doctors, best place to buy clothes, etc. It is rude to leave your cart in the middle of the aisle because they are so narrow that you cannot get a cart on either side., and they might not know who's cart it is.

Well these days people are too full of themselves. And its not right to leave your cart in the middle of the isle. Keep it close to you. But sometimes, no matter where you have it, someone will need an item where its located at. Just tell the person "excuse me"....and don't wait for them to notice you standing there, because chances are they won't.

I always say "excuse me" when someone is blocking my way. However, I do not go to the store to make friends, my time is too valuable and I need to get my errands done and get home to where most of my real life is. I really don't give a crap about meeting new people. I do smile and try to make the shopping trip as pleasant as possible, but that's it.

Everyone is looking for offers. A department store is supposed to be quick. So long lines get on people's nerves. And you can catch all sorts of germs in such places. So everyone is trying to clear out as soon as possible.

I've worked five years for a grocery store in the suburbs of Baltimore. It's just my observation that when you deal with people in the general public, you can never be totally sure what to expect from one person to the next. Some costumers are rude and arrogant, most people are just cordial with public politeness as they just try to go about their business without causing a scene.
Just remember that when you are in a grocery store, you tend to deal with costumers from different walks of life, with different moral values. If everyone was friendly, polite and honest, we wouldn't have need for security gaurds at grocery stores to go around keeping an eye out for shoplifters and managers wouldn't have to worry about dealing with jerks causing a scene with other costumers, or store employees.

I haven't noticed that people do things like that... I tend to look around at peoples' faces, and if someone notices me looking, I'll smile and look away... they generally smile back. And I always say "Excuse me" if I need someone to move...
Like someone else said, I don't go to the market to make friends, but I also see no point in being grumpy if it would be easier to be polite.

Change grocery stores, the folks that shop at Tom Thumb are very friendly, we chat (real speech) all the time while shopping.
Mygrand, it is "couth" that they lack, not kooth OMG
OH, California? that explains it, LOL People here in Texas are much friendlier, and the ethnic blend is much more of a blend than a lopsided mix.

Did you happen to move from a U.S. southern state to a Yankee one? People seem more reserved outside of the South. That's not a criticism, but an observation.
Lots of people are wary of strangers. Sometimes they just have a bad day. This thought has been voiced before: The woman who cuts you off on the freeway may be trying to get to school to pick up sick kids and her boss does not understand. The distracted clerk may have just seen his son off to Iraq, and on and on. Try not to respond to the rudeness with anger or rudeness of your own.

Don't leave your cart in the middle of the idle and they won't try to move it(by the way, that's rude). If you ask open-ended question they will answer you. Like want do you think about this?
