We were enjoying dinner in a relatively upscale Asian-fusion restaurant in Florida when a party of 6-8 women were seated nearby. Given that we were in a nicer area of town and the fact that they were nicely dressed, it didn't seem odd until . . .
They all started cackling and laughing and beating on the table and jumping up and running around. Other patrons, especially those nearby, seemed disturbed by their lack of cooth. Their commotion could he heard in the furthest corner of the room.
As we left, I wanted to ask if they were celebrating Stella getting her groove back, but I knew that it would be lost on them.
The day before, in a Chili's, people were letting their bare-footed toddler sit on the dirty floor.
Why do Americans, in general, lack the education to know what's appropriate behavior in public?

Yeah, Dervish. When you're two tables away and it sounds like the tribe is about to eat some dude tied to a tree, it's hard to NOT notice.

"Perhaps a little over the top, but it seems they were having a lot more fun than you were. If you'd been enjoying your food and company, you'd hardly notice what was going on elsewhere in the restaurant."
Yes, well, some people's idea of 'fun' doesn't always correspond with other people's idea of it.
Being loud and obnoxious regardless of your surroundings has nothing to do with 'having fun' - it only has to do with giving your fellow man a big middle finger.
People PAY to go to restaurants and can reasonably expect to have a nice quiet meal if that is what they choose to enjoy.

My dad always used the term that people today have a case of "I"-itis. They don't have consideration for others and the fact that we have to get along as a society. It's all about what I want, and what I think , and how I feel. People need to start being more considerate. I'd be pissed if I was paying for a nice meal and it was ruined by someone else's lack of manners.
Don't even get me started on how parents let their kids behave in public! That's a LONG opinion there...

You know, I'm generally against crashing generalities but usually, if you meet a group of Americans in a restaurant you will soon find out what they are doing, where they are from and where they are going to even if you are seated clear across the room. What happens to them, does the food make them high or what?

Perhaps a little over the top, but it seems they were having a lot more fun than you were. If you'd been enjoying your food and company, you'd hardly notice what was going on elsewhere in the restaurant. I'm sure if they were truly being disturbing, management would have said something to them.
Lighten up and smile when others are happy! Life is too short to take yourself so seriously!
As for the toddler. management should have insisted that the child be put in a booster if the parents were too stupid to do so.

You should try going out with my 74 year old father-in-law. He picks his nose at the table and then pulls out his prize and looks it over before wiping it on the tablecloth (that is, if we aren't fast enough handing him a napkin). He also puts empty butter containers or rolls he has taken a bite out of into the roll basket (again, if we don't catch him in time). Yeeeech!!

It's not just in America, I work in a kids clothing store in Australia and we had a mother and her 5/6 yr old child come in. He said he needed to go to the bathroom and she told him to hold it whilst she was shopping. He went off round the back of our store (we have a play area) after about 10 minutes his mother went to collect him and they left... I went around the back to tidy up the toys and to my AMAZEMENT AND HORROR, I saw that he had Pee'd in the corner... not only that... his mother would have seen it and instead of cleaning it or at least alerting me, she chose to just walk out...
WHO DOES THAT???

Sadly, I think they know what's appropriate they just don't care. They are selfish. Next time speak to the manager.

I don't think that it is necessarily lacking the education as much as it is choosing to act however they desire regardless of people around them.
