What do you do for the guy/girl holding it?.............I saw a guy in DC holding a sign that read : "Why lie?....I need a beer!" anyway, it provoked this question....(Let's assume they aren't all pro-panhandlers)

Not necessarily true that most are drunks or panhandlers. And it is easy to just say get a job but not so easy to get one if you are in that situation. Who would hire someone who looked like they had been living on the street? Not many people. Some situations may have been unable to foresee or prevent. What would you do if your house burned down and you had no family to turn to and none of your friends could help? Makes you think a bit more doesn't it?

I saw the same sign and gave money with a smile because I buy rounds in the bar all the time.

I usually don't give other people holding a sign because I see the same people with the same sign---always with a change of clothing.

My father drives a bus for a living now and he picked up and dropped off a guy one time that holds a sign---he has a home and a Mercedes---and honestly told my dad that he clears almost 300 dollars on a good day.

The ones truly in need don't hold signs. I worked downtown fro almost ten years and would hand out 20 dollars to people sleeping on bus benches.

I watched a documentary a few years back unfortunately I have forgotten it's title and what channel it was even on but do you know that some of those "panhandlers" make MORE money than the average working man. I understand that some of them are legit but alot of them are SCAMERS! We have one who stands on an intersection just blocks from my house, I've seen that same S O B getting in to a brand new, very expensive Mercedes-Benz and driving off!

I have given money to old men and women. I have never given money to young men. The reason I never do is that I'm afraid that they might be using panhandling as a way to rob somebody. A girl needs to think and protect herself!
But if I were homeless I'd probably want to have a beer or two as well!

At least they are asking and not stealing and one can give or turn them down at their own choice. I normally give if I have it. Now it has been told to us that these poised as poor asking and yet some of them become filty rich and raised enough money to buy cars homes and other things of life. So it is up to people to use the hudgement in their heart meaning follow your heart--feelings. You give with a good heart then God promises that it will be given back to you so you are not really losing nothing.

It would be nice if we could check them out by ID or internet and see if they are ligit. Otherwise it should be against the law for this tolerance.

You know what I do? If I want to give, I give, and if they use it for a beer or drugs or food, its their decision. Its not that I am giving away millions of dollars. We all need cigarrettes and stuff anyways and nobody is telling us what to buy. If they are doing what they are doing is because they need money, whether is to pay rent, food, beer, cigarretes or diapers or pet food or whatever.............I don't think they are donald trump so I just give them what I can.

I truly don't beleive they have money like everyone says, if so, maybe is 1 out of a million. That is just people who hates homeless for some reason and create those stories so people stereotype and hate them.

I always say to myself..........hey U never know, that could be me or my kids or my grandkids. God has surprises for all of us so better help the needy.

I won't give anything at an intersection, I consider it more important for my safety and that of others to watch traffic. I don't let myself be distracted and I won't encourage someone to keep this practice.

I do sometimes give to homeless in malls, train- or busstations, depending on my mood. And yes I prefer honesty! I've even given to a guy once who told me he was desperate for his drugs, I mean, he's long addicted anyhow, if he doesn't get it that day it's not like he's going to be cured, only miserable... I thought his honesty was refreshing after all the folks who claim they've lost their wallet and need money for a train ticket home, if it's obviously they're lying I don't give them anything.

I live in a rural area where you don't see this often but when I do, I give them $5-10. I can't look at a person who appears to be in need and ignore it. If I lived where this was more prominent...well I couldn't afford to help them all. But once or twice a year, it doesn't kill me to part with five or ten bucks.

I would not give them money that would just be spent on drugs or alcohol, but I have given people on the streets food. If they are truley hungry they will appreciate it, and most do.

I don't give money, I give food. I make a point of ordering more then I'm going to eat for lunch, and sharing it with someone who needs it. They can spend money on drugs or alcohol, but food is what they need.
