Toddler & Preschooler - February 2007

My daughter was put in timeout today for not using the restroom as ordered by the preschool director. It's part of their routine to use the restroom before naptime, but the entire staff is aware I pick her up just before naptime. I know my daughter, she doesn't want to "go" until she feels she needs to, and she doesn't have accidents.

I know she should be following directions, but I don't believe she should be expected to have a bodily functon on demand.

Also, I found this out when my daughter told me she was in time-out today. I casually asked the teacher, and she cast a furtive glance at the director and explained the restroom situation. As we left the director ducked into a storage room. This didn't seem odd until later today when I thought about it some more.

Should I talk with the director or the teacher about this?

PS, I thank God this isn't 20 years ago, she might've been spanked for this. :(

My daughter won't stop going to the bathroom in her bedroom. She is potty trained, but when she is mad she will go in her room and use the bathroom. Then she lets her 1 yr old brother play in it trying to get him in trouble. I am at my wits end. I feel like I have tried everything.

I'm going to be 10 weeks tomorrow and I have the first ultrasound scheduled on Wednesday. I was thinking about bringing him to the ultrasound with me and telling him then.

Do you think it's too soon to tell him?

Serious answers only please.

What are the 3 biggest problems you and (or) your children faced in doing daily routines? it may concern anything, for instance your child is clingy; your child refuses to brush their teeth; etc. If you know why, please share the reason behind the problems. And please state your child's age, as well. Thanks..!

I have a bad back so I've been bathing my daughter, now 18mo., in her infant tub on the floor of her room since birth. Well, now that she's getting too big I've put one of those squishy mats (anti-slip) in the tub along with tons of tub toys and she FREAKS out! Then again, she's never really been in the bathroom before so she looked around at how big everything is. She calms down, after about 10 - 15 min., but must hold on to the tub rail with one hand at all times. Once we're done bathing, she plays a kicks a bit with one hand on the tub railing. Any ideas on how to calm her fears?

My 18 month old daughter sleeps in a toddler bed, which she gets in and out of freely. At nap time we put her down and close the door. Sometimes she goes right to sleep, but she usually just plays until she falls asleep on her own. Her awake time varies between 10 minutes and an hour before she knocks out.

Her room is baby-proof, so there are no safety issues. My concern is how long is too long to leave her in there alone?

I don't want her to spend her whole day playing alone in her room, but at the same time she desperately needs to nap! Any ideas of a guideline for length of time before I should pull her out of there?

The company where i work is giving me a vacation (paid - all inclusive) to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. It will be the last weekend of March. My question is, should i take my son with me? he will be a year and 3 months by then.

Our original plan was to go by ourselves, but our son is so attached to us. If he doesn't see us in the room, he'll start crying right away, even if there are other family members which he sees everyday in the room.

Should we take it as the honeymoon we never had and be worring about it all the time - or should we take him and have fun as a family.

Ps. he's a baby, so i don't think we'll get charged for his seat.

WHAT DO WE DO?!?!?!?!?

I am a 23 year old college student earning a degree in Child Dev. Administration hoping to one day open my own preschool. For one of my classes, I am currently researching Advocacy & the way in which it can affect current issues & policies of child care.

Having worked in many child care & education environments, I share the frustration with others in the issue of LOW wages of child care teachers & aids. People in this position often make only minimum wage & are expected to put in hours comparable to those of jobs which pay MUCH more...

Turnover rates in Child Care & Education Environments are not only high- they are growing...Teachers who love to teach children & aid in their education are growing more & more frustrated because they can barely afford to live on what they are paid...

As the popular saying goes, "Parents can't afford to pay, Teachers can't afford to stay...There's got to be a better way..."

What do you think can be done to help advocate for wage increases

I am very much worried about my 3 years and 8 months old daughter, who is not at all interested in eating. Her weight is about 30 pounds. Is she under weight for her age? She doesnt like anything to eat and there is no such food that is her favourite. She asks for chocolate milk whenever she feels hungry, that too 2 or 3 times a day. She drinks about 1/2 litre milk daily. We are giving her FLINTSTONES multivitamin tablets with iron since past 2 months.
We are vegetarians and for us it is okay even if she eats non-veg.
And I still have to feed her the food, while watching her favourite movies on TV. She doesnt want to eat by herself. She is in preschool, most of the times she doesnt even touch her lunch box. It is really frustrating. She is not very active but she likes reading books,(she just acts that she knows how to read), watching TV etc.
Please help me, how can make her a good eater. Any nutritious food that is good for the kids of her age? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks
