Better question, What would be the perfect pet for both you and the 4 yr old? The 4 yr old will be able to help and participate in the care of the pet but not able to do it solo. Do you have the time for a dog? Do you have the space are there allergies to concider? All these questions need to be answered. If the parent is wanting a pet and willing to care for it then then options are endless. If you get a fish ,hamster or other short life expecant animal be prepared to talk about death. good luck

That's very hard to say.

Fish- are fun to look at but are rather boring to a little kid. They'll want to touch them and try to pick them up out of the water, or like mine stir them with a spoon!

Hamster/gerbils- are too small, she'll probably squeeze them and drop them, and you'll be searching the whole house for a lost hamster.

Kittens- are sweet and playful but do scratch unless they get declawed, but I don't know what age you can declaw them. They bite too, if very playful.

Puppies- are lots of fun. But they go threw that bad chewing phase, and may hurt your child.

Birds- Another thing to just look at...

Bunnies-Can be aggressive about their territory and may bite her if she reaches in the cage. And they bite very hard! You can get them fixed though to calm them a bit.

A turtle might be fun, but a little one may become bored with that quickly.

Snakes/spiders- yuck

So, I don't know, I'd say a small puppy, that doesn't grow very big. The bigger dogs can bite very hard with those puppy teeth. A dog would be a playmate for him or her. Luckily, my dogs were already grown when I had my baby, so we didn't go threw the puppy phase with her. You, could also look into adopting a dog or cat that's been declawed. Must shelters will pair you with the right animal for your family's needs.

I have to agree with a freshwater fish. Beta's and goldfish are good because they are not expensive and require very little care. Our daugher started with a Beta when she was about 4. Later, she progressed to feeding the cats as well. When she was 9, she had proven herself responsible and we got her a guinea pig.

We did have a dog before she was born and the dog passed away last summer. We may consider another dog for her IF she shows responsiblity with the guinea pig.

Something gentle. Cats and Dogs can be a bit rough. The fish will starve because the toddle will forget. I would recomend a herbivore such as a hamster or rabbit. Even rats will go well. If you have allergies go with a rabbit.

a goldfish. Any other pet you will end up taking care of. If you are willing than a Guinea Pig is cute and good with kids but they are messy and you will have to do the cage cleaning.

Turtles are a great starter animal, and super easy to replace if one ends up kicking the bucket... if you know what I mean. Also Salamanders are a great animal to watch run around in a tank. Just go to your local pet store and check on the Amphibian tank setups that they have... very low maintenance... and very interesting.
:o)

A fish, colorful ones that have pretty stones and tank supplies (like a castle) for the fish to swim thru.
