Toddler & Preschooler - July 2006

The other day, my four-year-old son threw a temper tantrum. He threw the lawn chair through the window of our neighbor's second story apartment building and knocked the grandmother of the neighbor, and causing up to $15,000 worth of damage to both the upstairs and downstairs apartments.. Now the neighbors are suing us, but little Tommy is only a child. I am worried that he is taking steroids after this terrifying incident. My husband Drew has been taking steroids for weeks and lets face it, he's an animal. I know Tommy looks up to my husband. I don't want him to throw any more lawn chairs. More importantly, my favorite son, Todd, could possibly take after little Tommy. So I ask of you, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY KIDS??

I am desperately seeking a good childcare program for my 2 yr old. Is there any good recommendations that you can refer me to? I've been looking for quite some time. A lot of them are way too pricey. The range is close to $1100 to $1600 a month. I am more interested in anywhere under a grand/month. Please provide me with some good feedback. Thanks so much for your help!

My 4 yr old daughter won't let me or her dad know when she has to pee until it's almost to late. A few times she doesn't make it. We let her know that mommy and daddy are not happy when she does this. But when we are out shopping or running errands she will not speak up. At home, at Grandma's, at "School" she has no problem. Why does she not tell us in the grocery store?

And how do i break the cycle. I don't beleive that beating her is the answer. I let her know how big girls don't wait untill the last min. and that mommy is upset with her.

I think that she will grow out of it (I did). What else can I do that does not require beating my child for being curious about the world around her. And get her to pay attention to the signs her body is giving her.

my daughter is 4, and is a very active dreamer....she does not just mumble in her sleep. she says WHOLE sentances. Then she is having bizaare (sp) dreams...she woke me up the other morning to ask me if her aunts head was still on her body and why do people cut off heads...now, she does not watch violent TV...so where in the hell did that come from?

Now I talk in my sleep and I also have been known to cry in my sleep...could she get it from me? Is there something wrong with us?

What do I need to know about getting him ready for school? He is 22 months old. I do read to him everyday and teach him colors, 123s and ABCs. He starting to talk and Im very excited at watching him grow... I am very lucky to be a stay at home mama and would like to take advantage of every moment of the day. Do you advise a schedule if so how can I learn the proper way to teach a toddler all the basics? What are some educational games we can play and/or teaching techiques?

My 3 year old daughter has been potty trained completely since 18 months (her choice). Our neighbor is 6 and pees her pants on a regular basis (she's very spoiled by her mother). When they are playing and the neighbor pees her pants, then my daughter takes off her own underwear and the other day she had an accident of her own and acted proud of it. She must think it's cool to be like her older neighbor. I don't think it's cool at all. I told the 6 year old she couldn't pee her pants at my house, but don't know what else to do.

About a year ago my daughter was diagnosed with selective mutism. Does anyone have any advice or ideas on how to help a child with this anxiety disorder? While my daughter had autism tendensies, they said she didnt have autism.

My daughter has always been shy, but the past three years it has been an extreme kind of shy. She wouldnt eat, go to the bathroom, or talk outside the home. She went to the early education pre-school for the past two years and her teacher did wonders! she will now cautiously eat in front of other people, and will talk when she feels secure.

we still have a problem with her going to strange places. No matter how much i warn her in advance on what is going to happen (like being weighed at the doctors office) she still goes balistic.

if anyone had this same problem, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

GOD BLESS

My child is three and so far I've ruled out the common foods that cause allergic reactions such as nuts, strawberries, etc. I'm an avid lover of shellfish and have been wary of sharing with my little boy. Is there anyway to determine what, if any, foods he may be allergic to without actually giving him the food inquestion and waiting for a reaction?

Everyone in my house are HUGE Red Sox fans. My daughter (age 2) mentioned to my son that Big Papi was black. My son (age 4) corrected her and informed her he is African-American. My husband and I corrected him and said Papi is Dominican. My son's question was how can you tell? We don't know how to answer him. We only know because it's Big Papi. We taught our son to respect people's heritage and that the outside "color" doesn't matter. He accepts this and isn't worried about the color. He just doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. Is there more politically correct and non-hurtful terms to use when you're not positive? Or does someone have an answer I can give him?
Thanks for the help!

Tell me some learning activites that you do with your children.

I work with my 3-year-old on recognizing shapes, numbers, the alphabet and colors. I read to her also and let her look at pictures of family members identifying them.

What are some different types of learning activities you do with your small children?

What amount of time do you spend daily on this?
