What do I need to know about getting him ready for school? He is 22 months old. I do read to him everyday and teach him colors, 123s and ABCs. He starting to talk and Im very excited at watching him grow... I am very lucky to be a stay at home mama and would like to take advantage of every moment of the day. Do you advise a schedule if so how can I learn the proper way to teach a toddler all the basics? What are some educational games we can play and/or teaching techiques?

You have made the right start. Every child learns differently. My son love to do activity books and my daughter prefers flash cards. One thing they both seem to thrive on are the Kumon tracing books. They are set up to slowly teach them writing skills and fine motor skills as well as numbers and letters. There are notes at the top of the page for parents and easy to follow directions. Since they are consistent and easy to use the kids love to do them. Mostly follow your son's lead at this point, you want him to LOVE learning above all else. When he starts asking questions (and it will not be far in the future) try to find as much information as you can. Good luck.

Read, read, read. Did I say read? Look at the pictures in the book, and ask him questions--What color is that bird? Look at this page--what do you think will happen next? Can you remember what just happened to the bunny?

Sing! Get some kid songs and sing like crazy.

Use everyday experiences as opportunities to explore the world. I've answered a few other questions tonight about entertaining toddlers--click on my alias and check out my other answers for about 5 other ideas.

And by the way, read some more!! :)

I just try to take every thing I possibly can and make it into a learning experience. Explain EVERYTHING you do, why you do it, why something happens like it does.....etc......Toddlers are like sponges, they soak it all up! At that age he's probably too young to follow any kind of "schedule" for learing, besides....he needs to learn about the world around him still, and in doing that he'll gain book knowledge too.
