I just went on a 10 hour car trip with a 1 1/2 year old, so I know what you mean. I know you said other than a dvd player, but that saved us big time. Plus he took a nap so that was 2 hours of driving. We also took two days to get there so it made it alot easier. I went to the dollar store before we left and bought several new toys the bring out in case of a melt down. I know 4 is older, but it still could work. We looked for animals alot, and we would count them. Make it a game, Let's see who can count the most birds, cows, dogs, etc. We sang songs with motions(you could even make some up). With a four year old you could play a trivia game. Like ask him questions you think he might know, and then let him ask you questions too. It could get interesting and fun for you too, you never know what a child will say! Another thing my son loves is blowing bubbles. It didn't bother us for him to blow them in the car, so maybe that's an option. Be creative! It will also help if you have a layed back driver who will stop when needed. If he's getting tired and bored, stop at a park and play ball for a few minutes, or stop at a neat store, etc. Good Luck!

We use to play the liscence plate game.....especially if you are going out of state. See how many different plates from different states you can find.
Also the Alphabet game is fun. On signs look for the letters in order......J is hard and so is Q!!
Another is starting with the letter A---how many things can you think of that start with A---apples, anchovies, art, anchor....as many as you can until you cant think of any more.
The other is I spy....but a bit hard in the car....but as long as you pick things that are easy to find---like a kids shoe or something. I spy something small and blue----"The air freshener handing from the rear view mirror"....type thing.
My mom also use to play the quite game for my brother and I----whoever could be silent the longest would get a quarter. LOL!!
Another thought is to try to do some driving during sleep time!!! Say, leave at 3 in the morning!

"I spy" works really well. My 4 yr old niece loves it. Get creative. There are all sorts of guessing games you can make up to play, depending on his interests. You can always sing songs. If you will be going through a rural area, the look for animals. Something else that will work is to buy some new toys ($1 price range). Get several and hand them out one at a time if he gets bored. That way, you only spend maybe $5 or $6, and he thinks he is getting something really cool! (my mom did this on all of our car trips growing up) . Don't forget to pack some snacks that aren't too messy. When you stop for gas, make sure that your son is able to get out and walk around.

When Mandy was smaller and couldn't read, we did scavenger hunts. I drew pictures of things like cows, stop signs, horses, trains, etc. When she found it, she either put an X or a sticker on it. That worked pretty well for awhile.
You can also get something called Magnetix at Wal-Mart--and probably other places--they are little plastic stick like things with magnets on each end. They can build shapes, little houses or just stick them together. Those things kept Mandy busy for hours. I think it costs about $10 for a box, but believe me, it's well worth the money.

Does your 4 yr old recognize letters? If so, play the alphabet game. Start with "A" and try to find that letter on a sign or license plate. When you find "A" move to "B" and so on.

I spy with my little eye game is good with little ones. He can play it with cars, colors, animals, other objects. There are other hand held games to get too that may amuse your child and little board games too. Good luck to you and I hope this helps. Coloring books with crayons is a good distractor. Story books to read is nice too!
Hope you have a safe trip!

what about Music for his age? see if he can keep a tempo and sing along. I spy is a good game, see if he can find his initials on a license plate. one that I always played with my siblings is everyone picks a color, and whoever can spot the most vehicles in their color wins.
