Own home, husband passed away, but, I was not 55 when he passed away, I was widowed at 50. This pertains to homestead exemption and disability tax exemption for our property, but as a widow under the age limited by law to recieve surviving spouse's exemption, what to do now? I did not report his death in 1993, and to date, both our names are still on the deed, and the exemption disappeared in 1998, for an unknown reason not available to me, until today, the appraisal district said that I had not responded to any correspondence in referrence to the exemption on the house, they had on file the wrong address!! I now owe an amazing sum of back taxes, penalties, and interst mounting ...!!! What the heck do I do? I know that I am qualified for an exemption, but can not get that granted because of owing on taxes--which are not my fault, either, because I did not recieve any notices from the data on appraisor's end--wrong address!! What to do/ I am only 64, and still don't qualify?!

taking money from hospitals all over -- I was told I was incorrect and that he CAN NOT do this because it is illegal and needs congressional approval. I have the information in front of me. Here is what it says (in part -- it's quite long):
"the administration's move is part of an attempt to curtail soaring health care costs while moving toward a balanced budget"......(and here is the REAL IMPORTANT PART ---- "This proposed change is a detailed accounting issue of measuring "intergovernmental transfers" and needs NO CONGRESSIONAL APPROVAL" because of what it is being called!!! NOW DO YOU BELIEVE ME? If you honestly think this is a good thing and people are going to die because they are not RICH, then you must be a very uncaring person. How many of you out there RIGHT NOW -- Americans - are uninsured? I was BORN IN WASHINGTON, D.C. -- my father retired from the Pentagon years ago. I'm not a stupid person -- regardless. You don't even KNOW by my writing this if I voted for Bush.

I have been observing small-claims court here in our small county for some time. Most of the cases are credit-card companies or finance companies suing an individual for a non-paid account.

Almost all the cases result in a default judgment for the plaintiff as the defendant does not show. What I have observed, though is when a defendant challenges the suit he/she is allowed very little latitude as far as proof or evidence, that is, the judge will accept any little scrap of paper from the plaintiff as evidence but will generally disregard or reject any papers the defendant brings short of a cancelled check that they paid the debt.

Secondly, I have noticed that if the defendant is not present when the case is called, the plaintiff will get a default judgment. If the lawyer for the plaintiff is not present when the case is called, we will wait on him, sometimes as long as a hour.

I just wonder if the judge is prejudiced since she made her money collecting money before judgeship.

People buying "faux (fake) fur" trying to do the morally right thing have now found out from the American humane society the fur isn't fake, but real dog or cat fur.

People buying chocolate now have to try to find out from the chocolate manufacturer if the cocoa beans were picked by adults http://uk.news.yahoo.com/14022007/325/lovers-urged-eye-ethical-cocoa.html in order to be moral and ethical.

My mom says consumers and investors believing they are doing the right thing is enough and that people shouldn't have to check into every possible detail and angle, which isn't always possible to do anyway. She says the people who mislead or with hold info (labelling fur as fake or exploiting children to pick beans or make clothes) bear the burden of responsibility.

I think we need to educate ourselves and not trust corporations.

What do you think????

What percentage? We are in California. Thank you!

Each month I go to the bank to pay my loan payment. Today I went to my bank to withdraw money from my checking acct and my balance was 0. The bank to which I make payments had taken my money out of my checking acct without telling me. When I called them to see why they did it, the man I spoke with said they had no record of any payments for the last five months so his bank's attorney withdrew the money on their behalf. After giving them dates, amounts and confirmation #'s over the phone as proof that I had made the payments, he said he'd check into it and get back with me. When he called, he apologized and said it was their fault, and that for some reason they hadn't been recording my payments. He readjusted my balance and then asked if the amount they took out of my checking account could go as another payment. I told him that would be fine. So my loan balance has been taken care of, but the fact still remains that they took money out of my checking acct w/o my consent- What can I do?

How can I get some free legal advice in IN? I have no job, no assets, yet Legal Aid has too many cases and can't take mine. My ex is trying to emancipate our daughter (18). I was divorced for the 2nd time in July and have been trying to get on my feet myself. I am over -educated and under-experienced in the work force and have had some health (vision) problems arise during the last 6 months as well. It's taken me longer than I had anticipated to get on my feet and the ex is throwing this at me as well.

My spouse had student loans stemming from her prior marriage, which due to factors beyond her control she was not able to repay.
These were incurred in the late 1980's. In 2005, she and I filed a
Chapter 7 petition to discharge these debts, since we met the criteria established under In re Pena, decided in 1997. The Department of Education did not appear at the hearing, and they made no objection to the discharge of the debt. Now, two years after the petition was granted, the DOE claims that the debt was not subject to discharge, and in addition even though under law only half the refund should be seizable, DOE claims that they are entitled to the whole amount.
First, can the government collect a debt that has been wiped out by operation of law? Can the government disregard those laws that it finds inconvenient? Second, a spouse is not supposed to be liable for the educational debts of the other spouse. So why are they entitled to the whole refund?

The site is being used 1) as a means for terrorists to post their gruesome videos and other deadly propaganda. And 2) it also is a vehicle for people to post illegal or damaging videos. It is getting out of control. How can it be changed or stopped?

Should it be removed completely? And how could that be done?
Or should it have certain restrictions? I think it is obvious that it can't go one as it is.
