My ig is 6 years old and about 5 feet long. His home is in a large cage with a UVA light and he gets a very varied diet of veggies. Last year he had a tumor on one of his toes and I got that surgerical removed, but I think one of his knees is now swelling up too! He's still moving around fine, but I'm wondering if there is a common disease that ig's get or something.. any input is greatly appreciated!

I was given 2 hatchling red ear sliders as a gift and I've been taking care of them since then. Now, their shells are about 5 in. in length and taking care of them has become very difficult. Would it be bad for the turtles to be released into a nearby lake or pond?

This afternoon, I found a turtle/tortoise(?) in my front yard. I live in Southern California, near the beach and about a five-minute walk from a river and wildlife preserve.

How can I tell what kind of reptile I have found? Are there any websites with pictures of turtles/tortoises native to California? Are there websites that talk about what kind of food I can give it or what kind of habitat I need to put it into? How can I tell if it is a male or female?

Answers to any of these questions would be greatly appreciated, especially links to informative, preferredly legitimate websites. Thank you!

I'm looking into getting a UVB bulb. Currently I use a Exo Terra brand 75 watt Sun Glo light in the day time that provides UVA rays but no UVB rays and a Exo Terra brand 75 watt Night Glo light that I believe only has UVA rays (the box and internet don't say but they have to produce some sort of ray).

If I was to get another light that was a source of UVB rays would I use both the UVA and UVB lights at the same time? Would I need more UVB time than UVA? I currently have about 12-13 hours of UVA.Would using both simultaniously injur my turtle? How many watts of UVB should I use with the 75 UVA? Will this addition make the tank more hot?

I know the obvious, to get a UVB light but I really don't want to do this because that'd be one more light and a higher power bill. I really want to do it by adding a food source that has vitamin D3 in it. Currently I feed her ReptoMin sticks but I can't find any info on what vitamins it helps supplement. Does any one know this? It'd be cool if I didn't have to buy new food but it's ok. Her diet is balanced with greens and feeder fish too. And I don't need a food that adds calcium because she has a calcium bone she nibbles on. So..is there any particular foods that give good sources of vitamin D3?

Ok well I was walking to get the mail when I saw my cat playing with a snake in the grass. I ran and found a cooler to put it in. I put the cooler in front of the snake, but it didn't go in. So I got a stick to try and push it in, it went in!!! So I closed the lid and then thought, well now I want to look at it, and try to take a picture of it. So I moved it to a tall trash can and took a picture of it. I think it is a Texas Rat Snake. But what should I do with it now? Kill it? Let it go somewhere else? Take it to a snake sanctuary? I just don't know!

Before every one accuses me of having him illegally, I DON'T. I bought him at an exotic pet auction in my state. I also did research on the laws and it is leagel in my state, there are no fedreal laws prohibiting it either. He seems to just be really tired, dragging himself in and out of the water very slowly. He is in a 50 gallon tank in our living room, yet when I'm sitting and watching tv I watch him also. And i see him breating rapidly when nobody is bothering him or even around him. For awhile he quit striking at me when i passed the tank but now he is doing it again , which I think is a good sign, but i still think he may be sick. Is there anything I can feed him or do for him to make him feel better?

Do you think there is a nest in our house? They have appeared after heavy rains and cold tempuratures. Thankfully we have a kitty who makes noises when she sees them. I have been able to capture both snakes unharmed and release then outside.

I've read about blowing bubbles from their nose which means a respiratory infection but mine blows bubbles from her mouth. It's like she takes a deep breath and blows really hard and a stream of bubbles go out. She's only done this twice in 2 weeks. She sometimes blows just a couple bubbles from her mouth too every now and then when she opens her mouth under water. Is this a bad sign or is this just a sign of a silly, happy turtle?

to wander my yard during the day. I like in southern california so it is pretty much sunny alll the time. is this a good idea? What kind of care would it need. I need to know the basic on turtle keeping. I would prove a sort of pool as well. My neighbor had a tortoise that wandered her front yard and I would like to do the same in the back, only with a turtle.
Can you help?!!
