I think he has a respiratory infection and I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow.

I can't really tell you how much it would cost, because it varies from vet to vet.

Try calling them up and asking for a price quote. I don't think it would be that much check-up wise, but it also depends on the medication.

If it is a mild case, I'd doctor it at home for a week or so. if it gets better, great, if it does not, go then.

To doctor this at home you need to do a few basic things:

1. Make sure your basic cares are rock solid- is your tank big enough, warm enough, clean enough, well-lit enough, etc.? Check http://www.austinsturtlepage.com or http://www/redearslider.com for guidelines.

2. Boost tank water temps about 5 degrees, from 75-80F to about 80-85F.

3. Use a UVB bulb if you don't already have one. (Remember- they only last about 6 months, so if yours is old, replace it.)

4. Reduce stress. Minimize staring at it, handling it, noises/vibrations nearby, bright lights at odd times, etc.

5. Make sure the diet is top notch- you don't say the turtle's size, but good gut-loaded worms or crickets would be a help.

You should spend as much time as you possibly can. You never know if something will happen when you are ignoring it.
