I know the obvious, to get a UVB light but I really don't want to do this because that'd be one more light and a higher power bill. I really want to do it by adding a food source that has vitamin D3 in it. Currently I feed her ReptoMin sticks but I can't find any info on what vitamins it helps supplement. Does any one know this? It'd be cool if I didn't have to buy new food but it's ok. Her diet is balanced with greens and feeder fish too. And I don't need a food that adds calcium because she has a calcium bone she nibbles on. So..is there any particular foods that give good sources of vitamin D3?

Add-on....Is there a light that I can have in her tank that produces both UVA and UVB rays that keeps it warm all at the same time?

Also, if I use Electrodize by Exo Terra, would I still have to implemet the UVB? Exo Terra is the brand that I currently use for light source anyways. Her normal light is an Exo Terra Day Glo light and her night light is an Exo Terra Night Glo light.

D3 is an artificial supplement to supposedly make up for not enough uvb but in all actuallity you are poisoning you res. slowly but still poisoning non the less. most vets suggest you never use it because using it correctly is not an easy thing to do. calcium cannot bind without uvb. would you consider getting the uvb bulb that emits heat and getting rid of one of your heat bulbs? another last ditch effort is to take your res outside for 1-2 hours a day.

I'm not sure about food, but I buy this water supplement @ the pet store that I think works great! It's called ; Electrod3ize( and no, the 3's not a typo). It's made by EXO TERRA. It prevents metabolic bone disease, re-hydrates stressed animals, etc... Check it out! I just save a 1/2 gal. jug so I can keep the water tepid, & add the stuff. It makes it so easy.

D3 is in red-blooded meats, vitamin mixes, gut-loaded insects, etc. It is also in most good turtle pellets- although not usually specifically listed. In fact, good commercial pellets have enough that many commercial breeders don't use UVB unless the turtles are ill.
By the way- drop the greens until the turtle hits about 4". Instead of feeder fish, try worms, insects, shrimp, krill, snails, etc.- more natural, and more proteins.
Reptomin is OK, but Zoo Med's, T. Rex's, and Mazori's pellets are better.

You can give it all the D3 you want, but without full-spectrum (including UVB) light, your turtle will NOT METABOLIZE IT SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT GIVE IT ANY.
Take care of your turtle instead of giving it a long, drawn out, prolonged death. Get a light.
