How impractical is to have one in the northeast? I understand that it is more practical to have them outside and I wanted to know about year round housing for a tortoise this size. Any ideas or suggestions?

I am thinking of buying a Hermans tortoise. I have done a little bit of research and found out that tortoise tables are more suitable. Is it ok for a baby hermans tortoise to be placed in a table straight away, or do they need a vivarium for a certain period of time. Thanks Garry

I have an aquarium, with lid and lighting. Could it be converted to keep a small reptile or two? What would I need to do? What reptile(s) would be suitable for a beginner?

It's not the responsability thing because I've had anywhere from horses to sheep to hermit crabs. Mom was really getting into liking snakes but now the answer is 'no'. I think they don't want to spoil me cause my sister was allowed to buy anything she wanted, sooo... any ideas out there?

what should i do when my hermit crab molts? is it nessecary to seperate it? is putting half a bottle of pop over it a good idea? please help as i am buying them tomorow. what are the chances theyll eat their molting friend(s)? how long will a crab ( size of the petsmart ones) molt? should i provide water and food if its isolated? will it stay underground during the hole molt or will it ocasionally come up? if i have a plastic container, will it be bad if someone accidentally taps on the tank and shocks the (molting) crab(s)? thanks and thanks

What could make my leopard gecko, about 1 1/2 years old, start burying under the carpet in the tank? It just started doing this a few days ago. I have a wet hide and a dry hide in the tank. It has a tree to climb on, calcium powder, live crickets, a water pool/dish, and artificial plants. It looks healthy, fat tail, eating like normal. I have had it for about a year and its tank mate is about the same age, same circumstance and has never done this before. They get along great, I think they are both females. I am afraid it will get stuck, hurt, something. HELP!

I bought a baby russian tort in september last year. on the underside, the shell was hard, but not thick, as they get thicker on the bottom as they age. This is ONE picky eating tort. It is SO HARD for me to get him to eat a varied diet.

Anyways, today, I noticed the underside of his shell was soft (you know where the tort is connected to the egg, how that part is soft when first born, but then it firms up? well he WAS firmed up there just fine. But now that area is soft)
I gently gently pushed in on that area, and it sunk in a bit, but went back to normal position as soon as I let up.
What causes this? to much humidity? or calcium deficinecy?
What can I do to help this baby? I had been wanting to sell him. I feel I am not a good owner cause even though I buy varied foods, he wont eat well for me! But I can find no one who is knowledgeable around here in tort care.
P.S. the info I was told was to keep his substrate damp and moist to touch, but not soggy wet. that is what I did

My godson (just turning 6) is wanting a pet for his birthday... and really wants a lizard. His parents have already agreed that if I were to purchase one for him, that it would be great (they are pretty excited about it too!) and they would help him take care of it. My question is what type of lizard do I look for that makes a good pet? Also when I decide on the type of lizard to get... what should I look for when purchasing one... (color, activity, size price ect...) I don't know too much about them! Any info would be great!
