Many water turtles will hibernate/brumate in the mud bottom of a pond. Even if the surface freezes over they can still survive because hibernation causes their metabolisms to greatly slow, heart and respirations included. Respiration can occur through their skin and some say through their cloaca or vent area to a certain extent. In this state, turtles can go months without eating.
