How impractical is to have one in the northeast? I understand that it is more practical to have them outside and I wanted to know about year round housing for a tortoise this size. Any ideas or suggestions?

It is impractical to own a tortoise that, as an adult, is awkward to carry between the indoors shelter and the outdoors shelter, or that is tough to house indoors properly. Even a 10x10 room is small for a Sulcata.

These guys, as adults, are heavy, hungry, and strong. They can literally walk through a fence or drywall.

Personally, and this is JUST MY opinion, I think it is a bit foolish to house one of the giant species in a place so foreign and hostile to their needs. I live in the Midwest and cannot justify keeping one of these guys.

You may want to read accounts of other owners before you buy-
